In the days that followed, people gathered outside Mother Emanuel.

They brought flowers.
They stood together.
They made space for one another.
They responded with presence and care.

From its formation through the traumas of the Civil War and Reconstruction, to its critical role in the Civil Rights Movement, the people of Mother Emanuel withstood enslavement and all manner of violence with an unbending faith.

Through generations of change and challenge, this has remained a place of faith, of gathering, and of community.

In June 2025, survivors, families, and friends gathered to mark ten years.

Grief, love, faith, and remembrance were present... as was the heaviest weight to bear: the ongoing challenge to manage forgiveness and loss.

The past lays a heavy hand on the present.

We gathered to remember that love is stronger than hate.

We continue to pray that the Emanuel Nine’s sacrifice will open minds to greater humanity.

“Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.” - Amazing Grace

These words have been sung in churches for generations.

They reflect a faith that is carried forward, one step at a time.

Mother Emanuel has shaped forgiveness into both a religious practice and a survival tool.

It has faced hate with faith.
It has led with courage.
It has chosen engagement over silence.

The Emanuel Nine Memorial will amplify that faith, courage, and engagement.

These words are both instruction and invitation.

Faith is more than a belief. It is also a practice that has guided Mother Emanuel since its founding, and carried the congregation through 2015.

The memorial stands for remembrance, yet also to call each of us toward justice, mercy, and humility in our own lives.

On July 22, 2023, ground was broken for the Emanuel Nine Memorial.

What began as vision moved into action.

Since then, the work has continued, shaping a space for remembrance, reflection, and learning.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who lead, care, and carry so much for others.

Within Mother Emanuel, generations of women have shaped the life of the church through faith and service.

Among the Emanuel Nine were mothers and grandmothers whose impact continues to be felt.

Today, we honor them and honor you.

“Mother Emanuel” by Kevin Sack has been named a 2026 Pulitzer Prize finalist in General Nonfiction.

The book tells the story of a congregation that has stood at the center of American history for more than two centuries. From its founding as an act of resistance, through slavery, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement, to the tragedy that brought it to the world’s attention in 2015, it is a history of a community that refuses to be broken.

Sack is an American journalist and was a senior reporter for The New York Times for 30 years. He spent years in Charleston researching and reporting the history, attending services, meeting with families, survivors, and congregation members throughout. That commitment shows on every page.

We’re grateful this work is reaching more people, and we’re honored to welcome Kevin to the Emanuel Nine Memorial Board of Directors soon.

Two cities. Two tragedies.

In just 24 hours, Atlanta and New York City have both been shaken by senseless gun violence—each incident a painful reminder that our work is far from over.

We grieve with the families impacted by these recent shootings and extend our deepest prayers for healing, justice, and change.

Let us not grow numb. Let us remain tender, alert, and committed to building a future free from the devastation of hate and violence.
