John Snow - a man of many names and talents, a humble servant leader, and a champion of causes.

Before we met John, he had already lived more life than most people ever achieve. After a stint in the Navy, he spent a career as a Doc to our country’s elite forces (these stories are better to hear from him than to post here). After retirement from federal service, he went on to become a Deputy Sheriff, a cigar aficionado, and a Master Woodworker.

We met John when he volunteered to assist in our first charity class at Marc Adams School of Woodworking. He immediately fit in with our group and volunteered to help where he could. We hear this on occasion, but John really meant it and began stepping up in a big way.

For the last three years John has served as SMO’s ambassador to MASW, where he has excelled in building our relationship not just with the school, but with the student body as well. His efforts have been one of the most impactful to our community, allowing for dozens of students to begin and continue their woodworking journey, while raising funds that also support our other programs.

It’s time to give John a new title. While at Tough Ruck this last weekend, John graciously accepted our invitation to join the Board of Directors. His motivation, tenacity, consideration, and empathy will continue to help our community in the coming years, and we are deeply honored to have him as a leader on our team.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present John SMO.

Happy Friday, SMO community!

As we move into spring, our volunteers and supporters have a busy season ahead. A few things on the agenda:

Our ninth Boston Marathon Tough Ruck is just two weeks out. We will be honoring our fallen while rucking 26.2 miles carrying their names. The team is crushing prep and training, and we are looking forward to one of our best showings yet.

Some of our members are currently at Marc Adams School of Woodworking (MASW), helping others, learning new skills, and advocating for SMO. They are doing great work there, and we cannot wait to attend the MASW/SMO charity event in September. Let us know if you would like to be considered for a slot.

2026 Service Project: We are in the planning phases of our primary project, with the goal of providing needed home restoration to a deserving veteran, LEO, or first responder family. We will need significant support, so if you want to get involved at the ground level, this is a great opportunity.

Fishing outings: These are flexible but always a hit. Let us know if you want to join one or help support.

Golf outing: We know many of you are waiting to sign up, and we are committed to giving you a great experience while supporting the organization. Due to rising costs, we are exploring course options and will have details shortly. We have a tentative date of October 8 and will share more as soon as everything is finalized.

If you have questions, ideas, or want to get involved, please reach out. We are always looking for committed supporters and leaders to help us serve our community. And to those putting in the work, we appreciate you.

With my respect and appreciation,
Ben W.
Executive Director

On this Giving Tuesday, we want to take a moment to express our appreciation for all of you: from those who dedicate their time and effort setting up events, donating gear and logistics, those who are actively supporting our ongoing service project in Colorado, those who provide a safe environment for veterans to learn new skills, and oh so many more.

We received a call today from someone who we have only met a few times at our golf outing. He believes in our mission enough to steer his company’s philanthropic donations our way - and we pledge to put these funds right back to their intended use, supporting our veterans.

We are working behind the scenes on some huge initiatives. Stay tuned, get involved, and if you are so inclined, we welcome your ongoing support.

Thank you to Ryan Briggs and The Briggs Team for sponsoring our shirts for the third consecutive year. These premium Huk performance shirts will be given to every player at next week’s 3rd Annual Send Me Outdoors Charity Golf Classic at The Cannon Club in Lothian, Maryland. Their continued support helps make this event possible and directly contributes to our mission of helping veterans reconnect and heal through shared adventure, service, and community.

We are one week away, and this is shaping up to be our best golf outing yet. Sponsorships are still available for those who want to stand with us in supporting veterans and active-duty members, whether on the course or by sponsoring their participation.

Join us. Sponsor. Play. Stand with us.

Who has what it takes to take home this trophy?

Our “Last Place Champion” team from last year is signed up and ready to defend their title at the SMO Golf Classic, October 22–23 at The Cannon Club in Lothian, MD. Think you can flush them?

On a serious note: Send Me Outdoors is an all-volunteer nonprofit. Our team pours countless hours into this event so veterans and first responders can find connection, purpose, and time outside. We are grateful for everyone who supports us throughout the year. To make the tournament viable, we need sponsors to step forward.

Most sponsor levels are still open, and we especially need commitments at Bronze and above. Sponsors will be recognized, and you’ll be in front of participants from across many industries.

Whether or not you can play or sponsor, please consider sharing with your networks to help drive the event’s success: www.sendmeoutdoors.org/golf

Each cut, each stitch, and each joint our members make at Marc Adams School of WoodWorking is built on support that stretches across the past, enriches the present, and inspires the future.

Marc, Susie, and the rest of the MASW team, thank you. Our deepest appreciation also to those MASW students who continue to support the mission through their donations and grants! Finally, our thanks to the SMO members pictured here who give so much of their time and energy to helping others within the community and relentlessly driving our mission.

This week, that journey continued as our members created handmade leather bags - built with care, skill, and pride.

As this season approaches its end, we are all eagerly awaiting next year’s class schedule - and we look forward to seeing many of you there!

We’re just over a month out from our SMO Salmon Run trip at the Douglaston Salmon Run in Pulaski, NY.

A special thank you to FishUSA for their support in helping us equip our veterans for this adventure. The gear they’ve provided will not only be used on the river during the trip, but will also go home with our SMO-affiliated veterans so they can continue fishing long after.

Partnerships like this make it possible for us to keep delivering meaningful outdoor experiences to our community.
