The Town of Moncks Corner presented the Wassamasaw Tribe a proclamation for Native American Heritage Month on Tuesday, November 12th. Councilwoman Geneva Burbage and Councilman Darren Clark accepted the proclamation on behalf of the tribe. The Wassamasaw Tribe has been documented as residing in Berkeley County and Moncks Corner since the 1700s, following the initial push inland from the coast. Over time, members from various tribes came together, forming the community that is known today as the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians. This recognition underscores the deep historical and cultural significance of Native American communities in the region and highlights the ongoing contributions of the Wassamasaw Tribe to the fabric of South Carolina's heritage.
