Our Vandalia Microschool students were thrilled to finally get their bean plants into the ground today!🌱🌞

After weeks of patiently caring for them indoors, the weather cooperated just in time for us to move our plants outside. This hands-on moment is part of our botany unit, where students have been exploring the fascinating world of plants—learning about root systems, stems, leaves, and how everything works together to help a plant grow strong.

There’s nothing quite like getting your hands in the soil and seeing learning come to life. We’re excited to watch these beans grow right alongside our students’ knowledge! 🌿💚

We are so proud of the Upper Elementary and Adolescent students from Vandalia Microschool who recently represented our school at the Montessori Model United Nations conference in New York City! 🌍

Throughout this incredible experience, our students stepped into the roles of global delegates—researching real-world issues, collaborating with peers from around the world, and confidently presenting their ideas with poise and purpose. From delivering well-researched speeches to building cross-cultural connections, they truly embodied what it means to be globally minded and educated citizens.

This opportunity reflects the heart of Montessori education: fostering independence, critical thinking, and a deep sense of responsibility to the world around us. We couldn’t be more inspired by their dedication, courage, and leadership.

Way to go, Vandalia students! You represented your school and community beautifully!

What a SWEET day for our Vandalia Microschool students! 🍁🥞

This week, our learners headed out on a field trip to Ronk Family Farm where they got a firsthand look at the incredible process of making pure maple syrup. From learning how trees are tapped to seeing how sap is collected and boiled down into delicious syrup, students experienced every step of the journey from tree to table! They even had the chance to practice tapping trees themselves and sample different varieties of maple syrup — each with its own unique flavor.

When we returned to school, our adolescent students put their culinary skills to work by making fresh pancakes for everyone. Together, we enjoyed a delicious treat topped with the very maple syrup we purchased from the farm!

Experiences like this bring learning to life — combining science, teamwork, hands-on practice, and (of course) a little sweetness along the way.

🌿✨ Happy Montessori Education Week! ✨🌿

What is Montessori?

Montessori is more than a teaching method — it’s a philosophy of education that nurtures the whole child. Developed by Maria Montessori, Montessori education is built on the belief that children learn best through hands-on exploration, independence, and meaningful work.

In a Montessori classroom, students:
🌱 Learn at their own pace
🧠 Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
🤝 Build independence and responsibility
📚 Engage in purposeful, hands-on learning

At Vandalia Microschool, we proudly offer a Montessori education for students in grades 1–12, led by certified Montessori educators who guide and support each child’s unique learning journey. Our environment is intentionally designed to foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

During Montessori Education Week, we celebrate an approach that respects each student as capable, curious, and full of potential.

Interested in learning more about how Montessori could benefit your child? We’d love to connect!

Montessori Education Week is a time to celebrate the transformative power of an education rooted in respect, independence, and trust in the child.

Across classrooms, homes, and communities, Montessorians are preparing environments, observing with intention, and supporting each child’s unfolding potential.

This week, we honor the legacy of Maria Montessori and the living work happening every day in Montessori spaces around the world.

🌿 Service Day at Vandalia Microschool! 🌿

This week, students and parents joined together for a Service Day to clear the backyard and prepare it for a new outdoor play and work space.

So many hands made light work—and so many skills were learned along the way! Students practiced using a w**d eater, swinging a mattock, and digging with a shovel. We’re proud of their effort, teamwork, and determination to help create a space our whole community can enjoy.

We can’t wait to see this area transformed into a place for outdoor learning, play, and connection!

Our elementary students took a short trip next door to the South Charleston Farmers Market this week to pick out fresh, local apples! The next day, they put their practical life skills to work — peeling, cutting, and cooking the apples into a delicious batch of homemade applesauce. The whole school smelled heavenly as they prepared and shared their snack together. What a sweet way to celebrate fall! 🍂🍎

At the beginning of every school year, our students take an active role in creating their classroom rules and guidelines. Using the Positive Discipline approach, students work together to reflect on what kind of community they want to build and how they can support one another in learning and growing.

Rather than being handed a list of rules, our students engage in meaningful conversations, practice empathy, and contribute their voices to create agreements that everyone feels ownership of. This process not only sets the tone for the year but also helps nurture responsibility, respect, and collaboration in our classroom community.

We’re proud of the thoughtful and caring guidelines our students created this year!
