Post 1 of 3 - Recapping Sunday, July 5th

I was not sure how I wanted to frame the following 3 posts. There was a lot of moving pieces as well as emotion. Nonetheless, below is “Post 1 of 3”- Recapping Sunday, July 5th

Current Timeline and Update on Richard Rawlings Jr...

After spending 6 months in Berkely County Detention Center on charges of Possessing a Stolen Vehicle. Richard Rawlings Jr. finally bonded out on Thursday, July 2nd.

He was immediately charged with “Grand Larceny” and “Theft of a Dog” in Charleston County and extradited to the Charleston County Detention Center.

On July 3rd, I quietly attended his CHS County bond hearing where, subsequently, I met his father. I brought a picture of Bella, wrote a message on the back and gave it to him to pass on to Richard. We spoke at length about Richard, his past behavior, his current mindset, and his future goals. We hugged. We each then had the opportunity to speak in front of the judge. It was the first time I had addressed the court regarding Bella, and as you can imagine, it was emotional, and I was not quiet. I dropped the hammer, and by the end of the proceedings, the judge issued another 50k bond.

On July 5th 2020 at 12:58pm, 6 months to the day that I found Bella deceased body off of the road, not 500 yards from where he pushed her out of her truck, Richard Rawlings bonded out for the 2nd time in 3 days. This time, it was unavoidable, and as you see in the video, I was there waiting for him, as I will be waiting for him before each court date in the future, and eventually, sometime later in this decade, I will be waiting for him upon his inevitable release from prison. Waiting for him for no reason other than to ensure Change will be made in his life as well. That is the real closure for me.

In closing, as you can see from my lacking presence on social, I’ve been distant. This has been for a multitude of reasons. However, as distant as I’ve been, my team and I have not lacked progress. The wheel that is Bellas Legacy, and the Change enacted as a result of its progression, is still turning and always will.

Liz Berger was Bella’s savior. Her Lady in Shining Armor. In the fall of 2017, she and her boyfriend, Jimmy, former coworkers of Morgan and myself, rescued her on impulse in an East Atlanta park while responding to a Craigslist add that had listed a 4 year old, Male Golden Retriever for $500.

When they arrived, they met Bella. A 6-week old Lab mix, in a box, covered in fleas with her, now signature, broken tail.

Taken back by the stark difference between the advertisement, and reality of the conditions she was being held in, without hesitation, Jimmy and Liz paid the $500, grabbed the Box of Bella* and ran for the car. The Adventures of Bella* had begun.

So, identity issues aside, it seems that Bella was stolen twice during her short life. Once as a puppy, then again from Lowe’s. To be stolen twice....She was that special.

While in the end, Bella was taken from this earth in an indescribable, unnecessarily it pains us to think about the hundreds of thousands of dogs that are stolen each year then sold on a mainstream website without any regulations, or felonious repercussions.

Two things, among others, over time, will Change as a result of this chapter in the Adventures of Bella....

1.) Stricter laws and tougher or penalties that crack down on thefts, thus resulting in a decrease of online sales, among other things.

2.) Craigslist and other dog smuggling platforms’ policy as it relates to selling live animals online.

Now, due to the fact that Bella’s name will live in infamy forever, we have nothing but time. The fight for these initiative to become reality could take decades or more, however it’s important to make an impact in the short run within the current system.

We are drawing up some ideas to implement a system similar to the one used in Operation . “A network of volunteers harnessed as one, working together in order to identify missing dogs, and find them on Craigslist, in an attempt to match them back up with their owners.”

Please comment with some feedback, positive or negative, ideas, additions or suggestions. Tag your friends to increase the sample size.
In the meantime, everyone should practice Craigslist Distancing and...Happy Belated Mother’s Day Liz. ❤️

Kelsey Gilmore Futeral. A Low Country Legend. Mrs. Gilmore-Futeral has a list of accomplishments longer than this caption box will allow me to enumerate, and she is just getting started. She has played a variety of roles, worn many hats, and enacted an array of change since her arrival to Charleston in 2003. That said, Mrs. Futeral will be the direct point of contact to guide our team and mold our initiatives with her well connected and voluminous network. To have her join our fight as a Legislative Juggernaut at this stage in her career is about as big of an addition as you can make to an already boastful team.

As of 2018, Kelsey was named the South Carolina State Director for The Humane Society of the United States, in short, she acts as a triple threat for animal welfare on a daily basis. She educates government officials, judges, and law enforcement on the importance of the current laws as well as that of newly implemented and proposed laws. Laws that specifically relate to not only the welfare of the animals but to the responsibility that owners assume when caring for said animals. If she is not acting as an educator, she is identifying trends, gathering data and pulling together statistics for what is her most impactful and
glamorous piece to her puzzle.. To tangibly enact change by proposing, advocating, and implementing new laws that directly result in harsher penalties, and the increased ability to prosecute Animal Cruelty cases, on the state level.

We couldn’t be happier to pair Mrs. Futeral with Ted Corvey, as together along with the mob of people who are actively supporting the Change for Bella, will be the Squad of Squads in the fight for

As I hiked through yet another section of woods, some 1000 yards from her last seen location, I felt the wind move the trees above with a force I had not yet seen since moving to South Carolina. The tops were clicking together from 5 feet apart. My head lamp began to project shadows onto the pine needles reminiscent of an Alfred Hitchcock film. It was eerie. At that moment, my thoughts shifted and I stopped thinking of her jumping on me with excitement. Instead, for the first time since her abduction on December 22nd at 6:31pm, doubt crept in. Thoughts shifted from ‘when’ I find her alive, to ‘how’ I would find her body. Not 30 minutes later, at 3am, I finally decided to cross back over Rt. 52, as every inch was searched. But something pulled me back. I felt it. I knew. I looked back one last time. It was then, in my peripheral vision, that I saw Bella. Belly up, paws clenched from impact, yet still with that silly, goofy smile on her face. She was gone. Hit by a car on December 22nd as she attempted to find her way back to Lowes after being stolen along with my truck. Security cameras show her being shoved out of the passenger door left to fend for herself in a mall parking lot, in a torrential downpour, less than 3 days before Christmas. She was not going to jump into my arms. She was dead. She was dead as a result of a crime committed by a convicted felon. And the worse part, aside from never being able a hold my 2 year old, goofy, but beyond perfect rescue again, was that the State of South Carolina and this great country we live in, didn't care. In their eyes, whether I jumping into my arms or found her dead on the side of a four lane highway, it did not matter. The charges against Mr. Rawlings for this deplorable act of selfishness did not change. In addition to the charge for stealing our truck, her safe haven, he was, and still is, being charged with Stealing of a Dog. A misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months and a $500 fine. That is what my dogs life was worth in the eyes of our legal system. This is why Bella’s Law is important to me. So nobody else has to feel the pain that I felt and still feel, 2 months, to the day, later.

Meet Ted Corvey. As most of you know, Mr. Corvey is no stranger to Animal Cruelty cases. What began in 2015, while he served as the Assistant Solicitor for Ninth Circuit, as well as the lead Animal Cruelty Prosecutor for Charleston County, he captured the attention of the entire nation, while a dog named Caitlyn captured their hearts. They paved the way for immediate Change as he provided justice for and everyone who has ever loved an animal. Now, he is the lead attorney for Bella and her fight for justice along her journey for Change

After adopting Caitlyn in 2017, these days, Ted is a founding partner at Law Firm, practicing as a defense attorney. A seasoned courtroom vet with a private practice to run, and nothing to prove, he wants in on the fight for Bella. The fight for Justice and the fight for Change.

First and foremost he will be the legal representation for Bella and myself behind the scenes and in the court room as it relates to the charges against Richard Rawlings Jr. By the time Bella’s case is finished in court, Mr. Corvey will have ensured that the most severe charges were filed against said criminal, along with the maximum sentence possible to go along with the now inevitable conviction.

From there and even now, Ted is acting as the lead consultant for Team Bella and myself. The consulting he and his team will provide includes, but will not be limited to...Our initial fundraising efforts, the appropriation and accountability of those funds, our National Petition Campaign, our involvement with Corporate Sponsors, and any community outreach and/or organized events.

So please, stay tuned for the next couple of announcements as we identify the final members of our camp and begin to roll out our very concise and calculated plan that, in the end, will ensure that not only did Bella’s death not occur in vain, but that other dogs, pets, and animals of sort will be spared because of it.

As I would have hoped, you’ve already swiped left for the first glimpse of the final two cornerstones that make up . By far the most influential, knowledgeable, and proven individuals in their respective fields as it relates to animal cruelty legislation and prosecution. This duo is the perfect pair for what we as advocates strive to accomplish.

As expected, the last two weeks have been spent tying up the loose ends to many facets regarding our strategic approach to the starting line of our fight. We are blessed to have everyone on board, and will be releasing the layers of our blueprint day by day over the next two weeks.

This release will start with the identity of the duo themselves. Followed by defining exactly what ‘Change for Bella’ will entail as an organization and fundraising foundation.

Lastly, during the same two weeks. we will detail how CFB will fundamentally operate and act as the catalyst and driving force behind the implementation of in the state of South Carolina.
