The Navigation Center - SC The Navigation Center supports individuals and families experiencing housing instability and crisis. Each has its own rules and procedures.

Through partnerships, integrated case management, and compassionate support, we help people move from crisis to stability—one relationship at a time. Military Community Connections (MCC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2015. MCC leaders have combined experience working with veterans and their families who are having difficulties transitioning into the community for over twenty-five

years. In 2018 the city of Charleston asked us to open our doors to the general public. We did so and the Military Community Connections 501 (c)3 organization was renamed The Navigation Center. Military Community Connections is now a division of The Navigation Center. We help veterans, homeless people, families and mentally ill and addicted people navigate a very complex ecosystem of Gov’t and NFP organizations. The Navigation Center conducts a complete intake and assessment to identify all factors leading to or impacting our clients. TNC is able to work with each client to develop an appropriate plan to address not only the presenting need, but to ensure that they are able to eliminate the underlying causes. There are more than 30 + of organizations in our community that may provide services needed by our client. As you might expect these rules and procedures can be very confusing and frustrating particularly for those in crisis. Additionally, there are also many minor and sometimes major gaps in services needed to help those in need to reestablish their independence. This means people need a guide, advocate, coach and a cheerleader to successfully navigate this maze. This is what the people at The Navigation Center provide.

At The Navigation Center, we believe every child deserves the joy of summer. For children navigating housing instability, summer can mean losing the structure, meals, and sense of community that school provides.

This summer, we partnered with Second Presbyterian Church to host Vacation Bible School with the incredible support of the Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Charleston, SC Youth Group. It was an unforgettable week filled with singing, crafts, laughter, friendships, and the simple gift of letting children just be kids.

This is what walking alongside a family truly looks like—a community coming together with compassion, love, and hope.

A heartfelt thank you to Second Presbyterian Church for opening your doors, the St. Clare of Assisi Youth Group for pouring your hearts into these children, Chick-fil-A and Home Team BBQ of Charleston, SC for helping keep everyone well-fed, and to every volunteer who gave your time, energy, and love to make this week possible.

Some of the best things that happen for our families this summer don’t happen at TNC at all, they happen because our community shows up.

This week, kids from our Navigator families head to Vacation Bible School at Second Presbyterian Church, with the youth group of Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, lending a hand and Chick-fil-a keeping bellies full.

Glue sticks, sing-alongs, a church full of noise and craft projects. No schedules to keep, nothing to worry about except snack time. A time of singing, crafting, silly and just being a kid.

This is what walking alongside a family actually looks like: a whole community, pulling in the same direction.

In a good summer, lunch was never a question.

It was PB&J left on the counter. A plate of something at a neighbor's house. The smell of a grill two doors down that always meant you were welcome.

Food was just... there.

For more than 600 children in Charleston County identified as experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act, summer means school out and families may not have what they needs for meals.

TNC's Family Navigator Program helps families navigate food access, connects them to food resources to help keep kids fed because no child should spend their summer wondering what's for lunch.

Every child deserves the basics every day and a chance for a "90s summer." 💙

Nobody should have to choose between a doctor's appointment and keeping the lights on.

Nobody should lose their housing because they couldn't navigate a system that wasn't built for them.

Nobody should face a crisis alone.

That's exactly why we built something different. We call it the TNC Healing Ecosystem and it's the comprehensive continuum of care services coordinated through The Navigation Center.

TNC is set apart because we coordinate and track the journey. We literally walk alongside individuals and families. We will make sure they have their prescriptions, schedule an Uber to their doctor's appointment, and continue to support to assure long term stability and hope.

There's a trend going around right now highlighting the nostalgia of the '90s summer.

Bikes until dark. A neighborhood that knew your name. Lunch that just appeared on the counter. The kind of freedom that only exists when the basics are covered — when home is safe, the fridge is full, and adults have enough breathing room to actually be present.

We see those posts and we feel it too.

And then we think about the children right here in the Lowcountry whose summers look nothing like that. Not because childhood changed but because housing instability, food insecurity, and the weight of crisis don't take a vacation.

Over 600 children in Charleston County are identified as experiencing homelessness. When school lets out, the safety net contracts. Meals disappear. Routines dissolve. The grown-up stress gets louder, not quieter.

We believe every child deserves the basics every day: a safe place to land, a full plate, a family with room to breathe, and the freedom to just be a kid.

That's why The Navigation Center walks alongside families navigating crisis from insecurity to hope. Through our Family Navigator Program, we coordinate housing support, healthcare, and food access for families with school-aged children, because family needs don't end when school lets out.

As we prepare for Memorial Day, we remember that service doesn't end when someone comes home.

For some veterans, the hardest battles begin after their service; navigating housing,
healthcare, and a civilian world that can feel impossibly complex.

At The Navigation Center, 1 in 3 of our clients has worn a uniform. Every week, we walk alongside them not because it's easy, but because it matters.
This Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to check on a veteran in your life. Ask how they're doing. Really listen. And if they, or anyone you know, needs support navigating housing instability or services in the Lowcountry, we are here.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

At The Navigation Center, we know that mental health and housing stability are deeply connected. In fact, 35% of adults experiencing homelessness report mental health challenges and without coordinated support, those challenges can make it nearly impossible to find stability.

That's why TNC offers behavioral health services through our partnership with Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center right where our clients already are.

This month, we're sharing facts, stories, and resources to raise awareness. Because understanding is the first step toward change.
