Statement from the Executive Director of Prevail Illinois, Ky Newsome:

Prevail Illinois stands with Jane Doe. We stand with every Jane Doe.

The Jane Does who feared retaliation, judgment, shame, or losing the support of those closest to them. The Jane Does who were threatened into silence. The Jane Does who feared they would not be taken seriously.

The Jane Does who were failed by the very people and institutions entrusted to protect them. The Jane Does who were blamed, questioned, dismissed, or made to feel responsible for the violence committed against them.

We stand with those who were not ready to speak, and we stand with those who may never choose to share their stories.

As the story surrounding Jane Doe and the Cornell Seven continues to gain national attention, I am deeply disturbed by some of the public rhetoric, victim-blaming, and misogynistic attitudes that have emerged in conversations surrounding this case.

Unfortunately, none of this is new.

For generations, survivors of sexual violence have been subjected to scrutiny, disbelief, shame, and blame. Society has repeatedly placed the burden of explaining, defending, and proving their experiences on survivors, while shifting attention away from the actions of those responsible for sexual violence.

We have seen this throughout history. It is woven into the very fabric of this nation; embedded in our institutions, reinforced by societal norms, and perpetuated through generations of misogyny, violence, and silence.

This is r**e culture.

It is not merely a matter of individual attitudes or isolated incidents. It is a deeply rooted societal and systemic problem sustained by harmful beliefs and normalization of sexual violence.

At Prevail Illinois, we confront these harmful beliefs every day through advocacy, counseling, prevention education, and institutional change. We understand that dismantling r**e culture requires more than responding to sexual violence after it occurs. It requires challenging the deeply rooted social norms and systems that have historically protected harmful behavior.

To anyone who has found the recent coverage, public commentary, or conversations surrounding this case difficult or emotionally overwhelming, please know that you are not alone.

As we head into spooky season, here’s an important reminder: No matter what someone chooses to wear, their clothing never equals consent.

A costume, revealing outfit, or certain look does not mean someone wants sexual attention or sexual activity. Consent should always be clearly communicated and freely given.
