Happy Centennial Birthday to the Honorable John T. Copenhaver. "The Judge," as we call him, has served for the entire history of the Foundation, since 1958. "The Judge has always been looked up to as the stalwart of our Foundation since its formative years," said Ed H. Maier, Chairman Emeritus of the Maier Foundation. His wisdom, patience, and dedication have helped shaped us both as an organization and individually.

We can’t thank you enough, Judge Copenhaver, for your service that has left an indelible mark on our lives. We celebrate and honor you on this, your birthday.

Congratulations to Marshall University on the new gift for the Marshall for All program. The goal of the program is to provide a tuition-free education to all Marshall students. With the gift, President Smith has established Marshall’s commitment to changing the lives of students and the state of West Virginia.

President Brad D. Smith and First Lady Alys Smith made a historic $50 million gift to Marshall University to advance Marshall For All, a groundbreaking program designed to eliminate student debt.

“Our ‘why’ is simple: to level the playing field in West Virginia and Appalachia. We hope this gift ensures that every student with the dream of an advanced degree has the opportunity and support to achieve it — while also showing what’s possible for the future of higher education in our region and beyond.”

"A total of 292 financially at-risk students received $1,500 Maier Foundation completion grants of up to $1,500 a semester. Of those, 73 percent have graduated, 22 percent continued classes, and only 5 percent did not receive a degree or return to campus."

A 95% return rate of students with the grant demonstrates the great work done at West Virginia University!

Meeting held Friday.

We are grateful for the life of service of Holmes Morrison who passed away on December 4, 2023. Holmes served on our board for 20 years, as well as the boards of several other service-minded organizations in West Virginia. "Holmes remains the model of community service here in West Virginia," said Bradley Maier Rowe, Chairman of the Foundation. "This fact was recognized with the Spirit of the Valley award for his broad and continuous efforts to improve our state. He has left an indelible mark on our organization as well as many others." We look forward to celebrating Holmes' life on April 6 at the University of Charleston.

Today marks our 65th anniversary and throughout this time, the Maier Foundation has proudly partnered with many institutions and organizations to further both higher education in the state of West Virginia and the education of West Virginia residents attending colleges and universities elsewhere. We would like to thank those who have dedicated their time, resources, and efforts to educate and make it possible for these students to gain a higher education. It would take up too much space to list people individually, but we at least wish to acknowledge our indebtedness and gratitude to the community at large, the state of West Virginia, and the colleges and universities who help provide the unforgettable experiences and academic opportunities to these deserving students. We salute our dedicated board members over the years who have served faithfully to execute the Foundation's mission. But ultimately, this work would not be possible without the aspiring students who demonstrate how investing in their education benefits all of us. Thank you!
