Canaan United Methodist Church addresses the needs of people living on the streets of Charleston that are experiencing homelessness, poverty, that are in e
mergency shelters or transitional facilities due to incarceration, mental illness, or recovery from an addiction. We use a proactive approach to addressing peoples needs using appropriate resources before an individual reaches a state of crisis where they begin to violate laws or ordinances that typically result in admission to an emergency room, emergency psychiatric facility or result in an arrest or citation. An unexpected medical condition, escaping physical or mental abuse, alcohol or drug addiction, mental illness or a combination of these situations. Some people may have struggled their entire lives, others may have been doing just fine until hit with unforeseen circumstances. Everyone's story is different and whatever has led someone to this situation we want to help them get back on their feet by giving them a hand up, and not a hand out. We do this because it's the right thing to do and there's a moral imperative to address this issue. A united city is better than a divided city where less fortunate are ignored, stigmatized, abused, or criminalized. ( Our Services )
