Amanda and Karlee enjoyed spending time with troopers at the Martinsburg Detachment on Thursday evening. We had the opportunity to stay awhile, have many meaningful conversations, and continue building relationships in order for Begin Counseling to better support law enforcement in our region and state through professional counseling. We appreciate the warm welcome from West Virginia State Police not just yesterday, but any time we visit the office.

Throwback Thursday!

Pictured are members of the West Virginia Department of Public Safety—now the West Virginia State Police—with their Harley-Davidson patrol motorcycles in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Motorcycle troopers played a key role in highway patrol and traffic enforcement as travel across the Mountain State continued to grow.

Though the uniforms and equipment have changed, the commitment to serving West Virginia remains the same.

Corporal Bowland and Trooper First Class Rigsby spent time with local youth during Hampshire County Kids Kamp, helping create positive experiences and lasting memories. Through mentorship, teamwork, and community engagement, they demonstrated the West Virginia State Police’s commitment to serving and supporting the next generation. Hampshire County Kids Kamp provides area youth with opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, and foster positive relationships with law enforcement and community leaders.

Today marks three years.
Three years since we lost one of our own.

Sergeant Cory Maynard
End of Watch: June 2, 2023

On this day, we remember the life, service, and sacrifice of Sergeant Cory Maynard, who was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a shooting in the Beech Creek area of Mingo County. As he arrived on scene, Sergeant Maynard was met with gunfire and fatally wounded. The suspect fled but was apprehended after a six-hour manhunt.

Sergeant Maynard dedicated over 15 years to the West Virginia State Police, serving our communities with honor, courage, and compassion. He was a husband, a father, a brother in green—and he will never be forgotten.

Today, our hearts are heavy, but we will persevere. We draw strength from Cory’s legacy and from one another as we continue to serve with the same commitment and bravery he embodied every day.

We continue to stand with his family, his fellow troopers, and all those who carry his memory forward.

Gone but never forgotten.

It’s throwback Thursday!

Here’s a look back at the early days of the West Virginia Department of Public Safety, when troopers patrolled the Mountain State on horseback during the 1920s and 1930s.

Long before modern cruisers and radios, these mounted patrols helped serve and protect communities across West Virginia.

Today, the West Virginia Troopers Association honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country and our communities.

Their courage, dedication, and selfless commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten. We are forever grateful to those who gave their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us pause to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember our fallen heroes and the families they left behind.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
