⏲️ Mobility Month Extended! ⏲️

We're ripping up the calendar at Charleston Moves! Our last two events of the month got postponed because of the weather forecast.

🛼 That means we're still rolling through Mobility Month 2026, AND you can still donate to our fundraising campaign: https://charlestonmoves.networkforgood.com/projects/297606-mobility-month-2026

Our Mobility Month fundraising goal is $75k, and we're 39% of the way there. Your donation — no matter how big or small — enables our staff to continue shaping transportation plans and policies, informing budgets, collecting data, and mobilizing our community. 🌟 ALL of these activities are necessary to get infrastructure in place! We're the only nonprofit in Charleston County focused on prioritizing people who walk, run, bicycle, and access public transit. Donate to help us keep succeeding!

🚏 Weigh In BY 5/31: CARTA Service Changes 🚏

Ride CARTA is looking at ways to, in the short-term, improve public transit reliability (by addressing frequency, routes and hours), as well as better route coordination to yield shorter wait times.

The agency is requesting public feedback on proposed changes to the system via a survey that closes on May 31. There is also an interactive map, on which you can post comments related to proposed service improvements. Please take a little time to help inform changes to our local bus system that would help improve your current or future ridership.

📑 Transportation Sales Tax (TST) Update, Get Ready! 📑

This week, Charleston County Council voted to advance first reading of their TST ordinance and ballot language — getting the $4.25B program one step closer to putting it on voters' ballots this November. The motion explicitly included that amendments will be accepted up to third reading.

This is important, as Charleston Moves has sent our requested amendments to council; our suggestions include:
📌 complete streets* language for program subcategories (i.e. featured projects, pavement management, intersections)
📌 creation of a transportation dashboard to lay out project details for public information and tracking (e.g., scope, timeline/status, cost)
📌 greater detail on what funding will accomplish for the public transit and greenbelt categories
📌 continuation of the County's Special Transportation Sales Tax Committee for the duration of this tax — again, for public information and project tracking

On June 11 at 6:30 pm, there will be a public hearing during which County Council will receive feedback on their draft ordinance and ballot language. This is one of very few opportunities that remain where the public can shape how this large investment will be carried out — how it can be transparent and specific, while giving the public a means to hold our decision makers accountable. Mark your calendar, and prepare your comments!

*"Complete streets language" means we are requesting that Charleston County identify in writing that projects in the TST will include the provision of bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit access as contextually-appropriate

The majority of Charleston County Council advanced a $4.25 billion sales tax question toward the November 3 ballot, but others said it was too soon, too specific, or not specific

Your Input Wanted: $15M+ in Safety Projects

The Town of Mount Pleasant has secured over $15 million in federal funds to implement their top (data-driven) safety improvement projects. With a list of 11 locations/initiatives (i.e. Rifle Range, Mathis Ferry, Coleman/Ben Sawyer/Chuck Dawley, Long Point, US 17), they want your input on which you support, your top safety concerns and priorities, and more.

👋 If you've yet to take their survey, we highly encourage you to do so via our Get Involved page (charlestonmoves.org/get-involved). The public's input helps shepherd successful project implementation — getting us closer and closer to an actualized bike/ped network across the Town!

The Charleston region should be one of the best places in the world to walk and bicycle, alongside spectacular public transit. Together with our supporters, we are changing the landscape to become a connected and accessible place, one in which we don’t just *survive* moving how we choose, but *enjoy* it. To get there, we are involved in plans and policies, in budget talks, in data collection, in mobilizing our community. We work with decision makers throughout the process.

Every time you set out on a walk, hop on your bike, or catch the bus, you can trust that Charleston Moves is working to make that trip even better ... and expanding the network so you can go even further. As we continue to advocate for a reliable system of transportation (and recreation) options, we ask that you please contribute to keep the wins coming. 🙏 We have just 4 DAYS to reach our $75,000 goal; we're 39% of the way there!

P.S. — As May comes to a close, as does our special offer with Philosophers & Fools, where 10% of all sales benefit yours truly! Now's a great time to stop by this wonderful local shop to pick up a new book, enjoy a wine/beer/snack, and unwind.

In wrapping up this year's Mobility Month program, we hope you'll join us for a celebratory ride showcasing the new multi-use path on the Cosgrove Avenue overpass and the two-way buffered bike lane (with green paint) being piloted along North Hobson Avenue on the Navy Base! This dedicated infrastructure advances the multi-modal network in North Charleston, and what's more, elevates the standard of proper bike/ped design for our region. Following the ride, we'll return to COAST Brewing Co. for a social hour ($1/pint benefits Charleston Moves)!

Also, we are still looking for a handful of volunteers. Please view available roles/shifts and sign up (volunteersignup.org/8YHWH) if you can help.

📋👟 Huger Walking Audit 👟📋
Thursday, May 28
6-7 pm
Meet @ Hampton Park's Mary Murray Drive/Ashley Avenue intersection

» Details + RSVP: charlestonmoves.networkforgood.com/events/99660-huger-walking-audit

As a critical east-west corridor on the Charleston peninsula, we are excited to host a walking audit of Huger Street to assess conditions and opportunities for bike/ped improvement. The City of Charleston has a streetscape project underway on Huger from Morrison to Meeting. Our audit will complement that work by focusing on the Meeting to Hagood segment.

Our ultimate vision is to have a seamless connection between the new Ashley River Bike/Ped Bridge, Lowline and Ravenel Bridge by way of a multi-modal Huger Street. So come on out to join us for a nice evening stroll, and share your observations, experiences and wishes!
