Last night we returned to McClellanville for a community concert featuring our guest string quartet from the McDuffie Center for Strings. The Mozart Quartet 590 was sublime and so beautifully played – the audience even gave a mid-concert standing ovation for the performance! The quartet then dove into Bartok’s incredible second string quartet – and the audience was blown away by the energy, passion, depth, and artistry. We ended with Charlton Singleton’s “Testimony” – a great compliment to the Bartok, as both were deeply inspired by the composer’s “homeland” (Hungary for Bartok, the Gullah Geechee community for Charlton).

A brilliant ending to the mini-residency of the students from the McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University.

A special thank you to the McClellanville Arts Council for hosting us, and the National Endowment for the Arts for supporting this program.

This morning the Isidore Quartet performed a mini-concert for the theater, marketing, piano, band, and string students at West Ashley High School. That was followed by a masterclass where the members of the quartet coached a select group of string students on the exposition of a Haydn quartet.

To top it all off, the Isidore Quartet members had the chance to answer some really thoughtful questions from the string students of Ms. Quinn at the end of the event.

What a fantastic way to start a Monday morning!

Thank you to the Isidore Quartet for sharing their knowledge with the young musicians, Ms. Quinn for welcoming us into her class, and the South Carolina Arts Commission for providing funding to support such important educational opportunities.

What an incredible, breathtaking performance from the Isidore Quartet for the conclusion to our 20th Anniversary Season celebration! The award-winning Isidore Quartet marked a CMC milestone as the first established string quartet to perform for our audience….and the audience was blown away.

The Isidore Quartet is known for approaching the established chamber music repertoire as if it were brand new, and that was fully on display as they performed Haydn’s “Sunrise” Quartet and Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 13. From a special moment in the Haydn where the return to the menuetto was approached without vibrato, to the pacing of the climax in the final movement of the Dvorak, there was such a feel of innovation … while also having a deep appreciation and understanding of the roots of classical music.

And not to mention the exceptional precision of the ensemble as a group! While the four musicians had glorious individual opportunities to come to the forefront (such as in the final movement when violist Devon Moore presents a delicate and deeply human callback to the opening theme of the first movement) – it was the ensemble playing that made such a deep impact.

As one audience member commented, “it was mind-blowing” – and we couldn’t agree more.

Thank you to violinists Adrian Steele and Phoenix Avalon, violist Devin Moore, and cellist Joshua McClendon - the Isidore Quartet - for making our 20th Anniversary Celebration Concert such a wonderful occasion.

This in nothing like an early Sunday-morning CMC TWO coaching! And this week is extra special, as students from the McDuffie Center for Strings in Macon, Ga work with our students as they prepare music of Dvorak and Rossini for their final Spring concert during Piccolo Spoleto!

Tomorrow, we welcome these four exceptional musicians from the McDuffie Center for Strings to Charleston for a 5-day residency. While here, they will perform two community concerts, one after-school performance for WINGS for Kids, an in-school performance at Hursey Montessori, a Lecture-concert, and coach some of our CMC TWO students.

We will keep them quite busy….but will also be sure they get to experience all the charm and beauty of Charleston 😊.

Meet the musicians:
Violinist Brinson Moore is a current Artist Diploma candidate at the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in music performance from Cairn University. During his time at the Center, he has had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses for Peter Salaff and the Ehnes Quartet, with regular instruction from Annie Fullard and Lawrence Dutton.

Peter O’Malley, cellist, is a student of Hans Jørgen Jensen and Brannon Cho at the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings. He previously studied with Melissa Kraut at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and has performed chamber music with Ani Kavafian, Jaime Laredo, Francisco Fullana, and members of the Escher Quartet.

Violist Anna Stein is a senior at the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University, studying with Victoria Chiang and Rebecca Albers. She is pursuing dual degrees in Viola Performance and Spanish, earning President’s List honors each semester, along with Departmental Honors in Spanish.

Preparing for the Isidore Quartet’s visit to West Ashley High School!

The string students of Andrea Quinn at the West Ashley High School have been hard at work preparing music of Haydn and Holst in anticipation of the Isidore String Quartet mini-performance and masterclass on Monday, May 4.

This morning, Chamber Music Charleston violinist Ben Weiss helped put some finishing touches on the student’s performance.

Opportunities like this are at the heart of Chamber Music Charleston’s educational programs, supported by a handful of our “Educational Investors” in addition to a generous grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission. And it is opportunities like this that help inspire the next generation of musicians and audience members!
