This spring, Police Support Specialist at Charles Town Police Department, Misty Waits, led her first-ever 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training (April 13–17, 2026), following an introductory 8-hour session in March. Nine participants from Jefferson, Morgan, and Berkeley counties, including law enforcement officers, dispatchers, first responders, and social workers, came together for an intensive week of learning, skill-building, and collaboration.

Topics covered included:
Mental health & psychiatric disorders
Substance use
Su***de intervention
De-escalation & scenario-based role play
Working with individuals experiencing homelessness
Veterans & PTSD
Family & peer perspectives
Legal considerations

"It was an amazing week of learning and making connections," shared Misty Waits. "Our Regional CIT team cannot wait to schedule our next one."

The cross-county participation reflects a growing regional commitment to collaborative, trauma-informed crisis response — equipping the full spectrum of first responders with the tools to connect individuals in crisis to the right services at the right time. This is what community-centered public safety looks like. 💜

Hear from JBA member, Adrienne Borgman, as she talks about tabling at the Charles Town Farmer's Market alongside Robert Shefner, John Pethard, and Brian Hairston:

"This Saturday at the Charles Town Farmers Market, community health is about more than just what’s on your plate—it’s about the resources and support systems that surround you. While the community was out picking up fresh favorites from Middleway or Great Escapes Farm, or treating themselves to goodies from Stone Hearth Bakery, Susie's Pies, and Cupcake Cottage, they could take a moment to nourish their community ties as well.

The Jefferson-Berkeley Alliance on Substance Use Prevention (JBA) joined local vendors to bridge the gap between commerce and wellness. Alongside fresh produce and baked goods, the JBA team offered kids' activities and resources for youth mentorship, mental health support, and community service. This initiative aims to build a more resilient community by connecting residents with vital prevention tools in a familiar, local setting."
