While it may seem tempting, do not prune woody trees and shrubs in the fall.

Pruning encourages new growth, and when done in the fall, the new growth that develops will not be well hardened off for winter, leading to more potential for winter damage. The best time of year to prune is later winter and early spring (February through March in Iowa).

Instead, use the fall season to prepare trees for winter by protecting trunks from rabbits, deer, and other wildlife with tree wraps, guards, or fencing.

It’s hard to believe the Iowa State Fair wrapped up just a few days ago! With fall quickly approaching, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the incredible projects Floyd County 4-H’ers had on display at the Iowa State Fair. 🍀

Did you know that more than 3,200 4-H projects are displayed in the 4-H Building each year by youth from across Iowa? That’s a whole lot of creativity, hard work, knowledge and talent under one roof! 🤩

Congratulations to all of our Floyd County 4-H’ers who had the opportunity to share their projects, talents and knowledge with the public during fair season. We are so proud of everything you accomplished! 👏

Take a look through the photos to see some of the amazing projects our Floyd County youth brought to the Iowa State Fair! 📸

Blanching is an essential step when freezing vegetables. It stops enzyme activity that can cause poor quality, cleans the surface, enhances color, helps preserve vitamins, and softens vegetables so they are easier to pack. Learn more about blanching and how to do it correctly from AnswerLine specialist, Rachel, in this video: go.iastate.edu/DGCKPM.
