What a pleasure to have Pat Burns of Elite Retrievers on the Buckeye Retriever grounds the last few days. Thursday and Friday did a seminar for advanced retrievers, Saturday and Sunday was a fundamental/ basics seminar.

We had a dozen dog/handler teams for each seminar with unlimited auditors.

Pat did an outstanding job of teaching, demonstrating, and answering questions from the handlers and auditors. Pat also records the working teams, followed by group discussion of the work in a group setting.

If you don’t know who Pat is, take the time to google him, some of his mentors were some of the top trainers/ competitors of the day. He has a ton of experience and success at the highest levels.

If you have the opportunity attend one of Pat’s seminars and want to learn, it would be a great benefit to to your progress.

I hope the people in attendance can comment on their experience in attending the seminar.

Magical Day yesterday at Buckeye Retriever Club!

Our annual club cleanup day yesterday was pure Magic, but then why wouldn’t it be when you have the following Magicians show up to preform.

Steve Szeredy, Randy Reynolds, Bruce Smith, Dakota Tomon, Thelma Kraut, Bill Bowman, Dan & Karen Groth, Rick Ketring, Bob Grano Jr., Ken Edwards, Izzy Wencl, Mike Blake, Brian Wilker, Tara Perby, Nicki Gear, Kathy Gaddis, Kathy Koenig, Connie Rigotti, Gayle Geiger, Bobbi Delaney. And I certainly hope I didn’t miss anyone, I apologize if I did, it certainly wasn’t intentional.

The day we get the grounds ready for hunt test season didn’t exactly start off under the bright light of the sun, quite the contrary, cloudy cold and snow flakes were more like it. That didn’t deter this hardy group from getting the job done.

BRC really appreciates all the contributions and efforts put forth by this group to complete this task.

I would like to tell everyone everything we did, but I was sworn to secrecy, you know you can’t reveal how Magic is performed. I guess you’ll just have to come out and try to figure it out, and be part of next years cleanup efforts.

Today marked Buckeye Retriever Club’s last training day at Crooked Creek Conservation Club before we move back to the Hambden Hills property. We owe Crooked Creek a big Tank You for allowing us to use their grounds for our early spring training days.

We had a pretty big setup, 3 marks and 2 blinds running of a mound. It was a little much for a few of the young dogs, but breaking it down and simplifying made it doable, even some of the more experienced dogs had their issues, especially when the handlers tried to run it as a triple. This was a better setup if you ran it as singles, but you could still find trouble. We had a good turn out, not sure how many dogs we ended up running, but everyone worked together to make sure all the dogs had the opportunity to retrieve birds, and most stayed until the end to help pick up equipment. Nicki led this training day, that was 2 days in a row for Nicki, she’s a warrior! Thanks Nicki , and also to all those that helped with all of our training days so far this spring.

It’s getting close to hunt test time, get your dogs ready!

Today was the 4th and final day of the Beginner/Introductory JH Skills class. The dogs got to do some water work, which seemed appropriate for the weather conditions today, and I don’t mean because it was warm and sunny! The dogs enjoyed it and didn’t seem bothered by the cooler conditions.

I know Nicki wants to thank everybody that came out, participated, helped, and learned.

Let’s give Nicki a big thank you for all she put into hosting this class, Nicki, thank you.

The dogs showed improvement over the course of classes.

We learned a lot about those that participated with their dogs, mostly new members, and especially today. These folks are into this sport.

We hope you learned a lot, and remember if you have questions feel free to reach out, Buckeye Retriever Club is here to support you.

Good luck to everyone in your endeavors going forward, no matter how you choose to proceed.

Well we managed to get the 3rd installment of our Beginner/Introductory JH Skills in before the rain came Saturday afternoon. The dog/handler teams went through an introduction to birds, more work on long lines, recalls with distraction, and steadiness drills. Homework this week is recalls with a long line.

Not sure what the next class has in store, but you’ll miss it if you come out. I have a few ideas, but I’m not gonna tell. You’ll have to find out for yourself.

Our second training day at Crooked Creek Conservation Club lead by Pete Swanson was once again a successful day. The weather was a little cooler than forecast but we didn’t have to put up with rain or snow! Member Bruce Smith, also a member of Crooked Creek was there to open the gate and give access to the equipment Pete, Nicki, and Kathy. JJ & Jackie Ramirez showed up early raring go and helped set up. The group set up 3 marks and 2 blinds that you could run any way you wanted, singles, doubles, or a triple. I think everyone that was able took their turn in the field, some taking more than one round, so if you could have but didn’t take your turn in the field, shame on you, this is a group training day. And also thank you to everyone that hung around and helped pick up the equipment. One person can lead the training day, but they can’t and shouldn’t have to do all the work, something to think about!

Good job Pete, thanks for leading the training day.

The second Saturday of our Beginner/Introductory JH Skills is now a memory. Nicki put the dog/ handler teams through holding blind drills, reinforced the intro to decoys, covered the sequence that happens in a Junior Hunt Test, and had the dogs retrieve bumpers or dokens that were both launched from a winger and hand thrown with gun shots. Handlers were schooled on letting the gunners help the dog if needed, and how to fire drill a dog to get them to the longer marks. One of the issues a lot of the dogs had was returning to the handler with the retrieve, I believe Nicki assigned this as homework. Use those long lines to get the dog back!

Next week the dogs may be introduced to ducks and who knows what else. You won’t want to miss this.

Buckeye Retriever Club is set for a busy weekend.

On Saturday we will have our Beginner / Introductory JH Skills class starting at 9AM led by Nicki Gear @ the Hambden Hills (the nursery) on Kile Rosd.

On Sunday we will have our second training day @ Crooked Creek Conservation Club starting at 9AM led by Pete Swanson. Crooked Creek Conservation Club 4323 St. Rt. 534 in Hartsgrove (Rome).

The weekend weather is looking good, so come out and join us.

Buckeye Retriever Club is having a Pat Burns seminar. There will be 2 days Aug 13&14 for advanced dogs, and 2 days of Fundamentals Aug 15&16. We are opening this opportunity to all that are interested as the cutoff date for members only to sign up for the seminar on April 1, 2026 has passed.

There are still working spots open in both Advanced on Aug 13-14,2026 and Fundamentals on Aug 15-16, 2026.

The application and additional information is attached. This is a great opportunity to work with a top professional in the dog training community.
