Today the Geauga County Commissioners honored Reba D***s for her years of devoted service to the Geauga County Department on Aging. Reba’s leadership and care strengthened the agency and positively touched countless families in our community.

The Board is grateful for Reba’s work and wishes her well in her next chapter.

As of November 1st, with the federal government shutdown continuing, federal SNAP benefits have ended. At least 2,671 Geauga County residents, including nearly 1,000 children, are affected by the cessation of benefits.

Pending action from the federal government, Governor Mike DeWine has directed millions of dollars to Ohio’s regional food banks to continue food assistance. Additionally, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will maintain benefits for “Ohio Works First” benefit recipients.

Resources are available for Geauga County residents. The Geauga Hunger Task Force (https://www.geaugahungertaskforce.org/) and Geauga County Veteran Food Pantry (https://www.geaugacountyveteranfoodpantry.com/) can help. A community food pantry group on Facebook which lists area food pantries by day of the week can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1275683957079648.

Geauga County Job and Family Services can help as well. Information is on their website: https://www.geaugajfs.org/.

Transportation, housing, and food insecurity impact individuals of all ages, and today’s discussion shed valuable light on how we can work together to make lasting change.

Special thanks to the insightful speakers from Catholic Charities, Red Tulip Project, United Way, and Geauga Hunger Task Force for sharing their expertise and perspective. 💙

❗For questions about your benefits, use the Self-Service Portal at www.benefits.ohio.gov. Geauga County Department of Job and Family Services (JFS) is also open and processing applications.

Our United Way 211 navigators can answer general questions about SNAP, but we can’t look up individual cases.
