This week was a great reminder that Toastmasters is about so much more than public speaking.
Karen shared insights from her time doing research at UNC, and one idea really stuck with me. She talked about what happens when you actually follow through on advice from a mentor.

When you take that advice and run with it, the mentor becomes more invested. If things don’t go as planned, they’re in it with you, helping you work through the obstacles. And when it does work, they’re right there celebrating the win with you.
That kind of shared experience builds a much deeper connection than just surface-level advice.

I caught myself today starting almost every sentence with “so.”
So… what’s wrong with that?
A lot, actually. “So” is sneaky. It sounds natural, but it dulls the start of your thought and weakens your delivery. It’s a bridge word that doesn’t need to be there.
Toastmasters makes you notice those habits, the tiny things that chip away at clarity. Once you hear yourself do it, you can’t unhear it.
Progress doesn’t always sound smooth at first. Sometimes it starts with catching your “so.”

The theme of today’s Toastmasters meeting was Listening. Our Toastmaster, Dave, reminded us that sometimes the biggest step toward truly hearing others is letting go of the need to be right.

A big thank you to Anna for sharing her speech on communication styles and to Elyse for her powerful talk on the dangers of PFAS. We appreciate everyone who contributed to a meeting full of insight and growth!

Joke of the Day!
Why don’t skeletons fight each other?
Because they don’t have the guts.

That’s how we’ll kick things off at Toastmasters today, light, quick, and guaranteed to break the ice. Our “Joke of the Day” is more than a laugh; it’s a chance to practice timing, delivery, and connecting with an audience in under 30 seconds.

After that, we jump into impromptu speaking, speeches in progress, and feedback you can actually use in real life. Whether you’re polishing a presentation for work or just want to think faster on your feet, today’s meeting will give you something you can take with you.

Fun Fact Friday
Did you know that the average person says um or uh more than a dozen times in a three-minute talk?
Toastmasters meetings train your ear to catch those filler words and cut them down fast.
It’s a small change that makes a huge difference in how polished and confident you sound, whether you’re on stage or in a Zoom call.

Hybrid meetings mean you can sharpen your speaking skills from anywhere. Fewer ums, more impact.
