“Preterm infants are fragile and require specialized care. We must adjust our therapies to continue treating them as such,” says Dr. Matthew Laughon, professor of neonatal-perinatal medicine at UNC.

A new clinical trial (co-authored by Dr. Laughon) found that the first line treatment for perinatal asphyxia does not improve health outcomes, and may harm pre-term infants.

A national multi-site clinical trial, co-led by researchers at the UNC School of Medicine, has found that therapeutic hypothermia may be harming preterm infants recovering from a specific type of brain injury.

Over 100,00 children in the U.S. have Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PIBD), including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

researcher Dr. Michael Kappelman was recently approved for funding to study new treatment options for PIBD. This research will be crucial for treating pediatric PIBD cases, as there is only one FDA-approved treatment class for young patients. Dr. Kappelman's team will be studying how newer treatments for adults with IBD may be safely used for children. 🩺
