Tonight at 7pm: Public Forum on Draft Chapel Hill Bike Plan!

The Town Council will receive feedback on the Draft Chapel Hill Bike Plan at 7pm at the Southern Human Services Center Complex, 2501 Homestead Road.

The vision of the plan is that “Chapel Hill is a community where biking is a safe and convenient everyday choice.” The plan has four main goals related to improving the bicycling environment in Chapel Hill. It recommends that the Town initiate a number of bicycle facility infrastructure projects, as well as policy and program strategies to make Chapel Hill a better place to “live, learn, and bike.”

The Draft Bike Plan is available at www.townofchapelhill.org/bikeplan

A message for student cyclists:

This Earth Day, come give your input about the future of light rail in the Triangle! I would love to have a few cyclists representing multimodal integration of cycling and light rail. It’s a great time to advocate before planning and engineering phases begin (2026 is the most realistic date for an up-and-running system).

April 22
4-5 pm
Student Union Room 3102
Please RSVP here if you can make it:

For those of you who find bike racks full from Durham to Chapel Hill, having space in light rail cars would be a great solution! There would also necessarily be a light rail bridge crossing 15-501 somewhere near Manning Drive. I know this is already being looked into, but it would be great to have pedestrian and bicycle bridges added on to the light rail bridge to make crossing 15-501 a nicer proposition. We could also bring up the idea of bicycle storage and parking at the light rail stops, particularly crucial at UNC where the stop will be removed from main campus.

Come and share these and other visions you might have! The more the merrier! Non-students are also welcome, though this is a meeting targeted specifically at the student demographic.

Thanks,

Eleanor Saunders
GPSF Transportation Chair

If you are an undergraduate student, graduate student, or faculty/staff at UNC, then I highly suggest you go to www.tarheelbikes.com and sign the petition for the bike share program.

The trial bike share program set up on South Campus by Tar Heel Bikes has been wildly successful and the expansion would increase bike availability to the rest of campus, ease the check out progress, and contribute to a bike friendly culture on campus.

Carolina Bicycle Coalition is in full support of Tar Heel Bikes in this initiative and encourage you guys to speak in favor as well.

Launching off the success of the pilot program, we want to bring a larger, more sophisticated Tar Heel Bikes program to all of campus.

The City of Boston this week is rolling out a new program that’s whimsically known as “Prescribe-a-Bike.” Part medicine, part welfare, the initiative allows doctors at Boston Medical Center to write “prescriptions” for low-income patients to get yearlong memberships in Hubway, the city’s bike-share…

We are representing the Carolina Bicycle Coalition at a meeting today- and we always say how many Facebook fans we have. The more fans we have, the more credibility we have to advocate for biking at UNC- so tell your friends to like our page!

The weather is getting nice- have your registered your bike in Chapel Hill?

The registration sticker on your bike deters theft, and if your bike does get stolen, the registration tag helps find you if your bike is recovered. You also get a 50% off coupon for U-locks when you register!
