Chapel Hill Lightup

Chapel Hill Lightup The Chapel Hill LIGHTUP is a Chapel Hill local organization promoting community building through arts, cultural, volunteerism and community engagement.

Our signature event is the LIGHTUP Lantern Festival. WHAT IS LIGHTUP? LIGHTUP 2017 is an inclusive community celebration of the Chinese New Year and of cultural diversity through sharing a variety of cultural and arts programs. LIGHTUP is inspired by the Chinese tradition of red lanterns, which are lit during Chinese New Year to symbolize good wishes for the year to come. LIGHTUP infuses the symbo

l of the lantern with creativity and expression. Participants are invited to decorate and then light up their lanterns with LED lights. The evening concludes with the community coming together for a parade of illuminated lanterns, ushering in an exciting New Year. Come LIGHTUP blessing lanterns to share peace and happiness with our community!

In Chinese New Year tradition, people invite neighbors who aren’t able to reunite with their families to their homes to share the New Year meals together.

On the first day of the New Year of the Tiger, the Chinese American Friendship Association Cafanc organized the local Chinese American community to donate over 400 New Year meals to 6 homeless shelters in the Triangle area.

An inspiring message from Asian American youth in our community for solidarity toward healing and unity based on truth and justice.

Beautiful! Well done!

Unity is what keeps us strong, nowhere does hatred belong. Let's remember every shed tear, and we will reconcile love to fear.

Our Story

WHAT IS LIGHTUP? LIGHTUP is an inclusive community celebration of the Chinese New Year in Chapel Hill. The ritual of lighting up lanterns during new year dated more than 2000 years ago as a Buddhist tradition to lit up lanterns to symbolize peace and harmony.

Since its inauguration in 2017, the Chapel Hill LIGHTUP has gained popularity among our local communities with support from artists, non-profit organizations, and the CHCCS public schools. By moving to Downtown Chapel Hill, the LIGHTUP 2019 aims to bring more events to our downtown, encourage participation from the diverse communities in our region, foster connections with the university and local businesses.

This year’s LIGHTUP is co-organized by the Town of Chapel Hill with partnership of the UNC Performing Arts, and Downtown partnership. The event will include dragon and lion dances, martial arts, culture performances and exhibitions, lantern decorations, and arts and crafts activities throughout the day.

A Youth Organization Lantern Contest at the Current Art Studio will highlight 12 youth organizations in our town. Two winners in the categories of Best Lantern Decoration and Best Essay will be selected by visitors to the event.
