Do you have questions or need support navigating victim notification in cases involving post-conviction claims of innocence? Healing Justice invites prosecution agencies undertaking conviction review to join our upcoming pro bono monthly office hours on Tuesday, October 20th at 3 pm ET. We can also accommodate alternative scheduling to meet your team’s needs.

During these sessions, we can offer individualized, case-specific technical assistance to you and your team on victim notification and support in cases involving post-conviction claims of innocence and exonerations.

If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Claire Liepert at cliepert @ healingjusticeproject.org to coordinate a time slot and share case details.

These office hours are open to prosecuting agencies conducting post-conviction case review work in any state or locality around the country at no cost. We can answer questions about specific cases under review and provide guidance on how to conduct trauma-informed victim notification and protect victims’ rights, including when notification should occur, what information should be included, and who should be involved to provide victims and survivors with the information and support they need and deserve during the review process.

In 1987, Jay Young's father was murdered, and Benjamine Spencer was wrongly convicted of the crime.

For over 33 years, "for the Youngs, every article, every court filing, every parole hearing dragged them back to the day their father died."

"In January 2021, the DA’s office joined Spencer’s attorneys in court to argue that Spencer had not received a fair trial and should be released while the state decided whether to retry him or dismiss the charges. The judge agreed, and on March 12, 2021, Ben Spencer walked out of the Dallas jail." He was exonerated in 2024.

"Jay Young learned that Spencer was free hours later, when he received a text from a reporter seeking a comment. In the coverage, Jeffrey Young was barely mentioned, and then only to set up Spencer’s triumph over the system. "
