In 2024, Healing Justice began supporting the family of Marcus Yates as their case moved through the post-conviction case review process.

In 1988, five-year-old Marcus was tragically shot and killed in a Philadelphia candy store, forever changing the lives of his family. Over the years, they have endured profound grief and additional trauma throughout the legal process.

Decades later, the family met with the two individuals convicted of Marcus' murder, beginning a difficult journey to understanding the problems in their case. In a two-part series of the Voices of the System podcast, the family shares their unique needs and reflects on their ongoing post-conviction experience.
One family member shared that the "positive emotion in this podcast is indescribable - it was done with intentionality to capture the needed support for victims and their families."

As we begin the new year, we’re reflecting on moments of connection and care that grounded us. ✨

In December, we gathered with 10 crime survivors and victim family members for a first-of-its-kind peer retreat through our P2P pilot program, supported by the National Center for Victims of Crime. Participants engaged in peer support, creative expression, and healing practices, and will continue finding opportunities for connection and restoration through the program. We’re grateful to create spaces that center care, community, and healing.
