Our fifth and final scholar is Tamiya Troy!
Tamiya Troy is a junior in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Spanish for the Legal Professions. Tamiya's commitment to uplifting marginalized communities has influenced her involvement on and off campus. Since her arrival in 2017, she has been consistently involved in the Black Student Movement, where she currently serves as Vice President. In addition to her role in BSM, Tamiya is also a Co-Lead for the UNC Spark program through the Office of Student Life and Leadership. This organization has provided Tamiya with the opportunity to assist first-year women in establishing a safe and inclusive environment on campus, while also serving as a mentor throughout their time at UNC. Upon her first semester, she noticed that there were not many students that looked like her, which influenced her interest in changing that. She became involved with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion through opportunities such as Project Uplift, Minority Student Recruitment, and other annual programs. Serving as a volunteer tutor and mentor for the Communiversity Youth Program hosted by the Sonja Haynes Stone Center, Tamiya enjoys being able to give back to minority students in grades K-9. After being selected as the Student Member-at-Large for the Carolina Union Board of Directors, Tamiya has gained a deeper understanding of the importance of representation and recognizes her duty to be a voice for those who are unheard. Tamiya's campus involvement has fueled her desire to ensure that individuals from underrepresented communities receive equal opportunity for success and led to her decision to pursue a career as an attorney. This summer, Tamiya plans to travel abroad and learn more about cultural barriers that prevent underrepresented populations from advancing in society.
Join us in congratulating Tamiya Troy!
