Sustainable swap: Focus on WHAT you eat, more than where in the world it came from!

Food production is responsible for one-quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. “Eating local” is a common piece of advice to reduce those emissions, but research shows it makes a way bigger impact to pay special attention to WHAT you’re eating — not where it’s from.

Emission from land use and farming account for more than 80% of the footprint for most foods, and animal-based foods tend to have a higher carbon footprint than plant-based foods.

Whether meat products are farmed and processed locally or shipped from the other side of the world generally matters very little for total emissions because the products are such high greenhouse gas emitters to start.

Reclypt is a New York City-based business that educates consumers on circular fashion, diminishes waste through upcycling, and brings fashion lovers and activists together at clothing swaps.

While it first started as a fashion marketplace for upcycled fashion, it evolved to start teach mending basics like sewing, embroidering, embellishing, and repairing clothes to help reduce waste.

NYC’s Reclypt’s Mending Club leads classes and pop-up events to teach community members how to repair and reuse clothing to prevent environmental waste.

When a piece of clothing gets a hole, loses a button, or a seam comes loose — our instinct can be to toss and replace it. But repairing it not only extends the life of the item, it prevents unnecessary waste.

It can take a little more time, money, and energy to fix something before throwing it out — but it’s arguably less, when we consider the cost of tossing and replacing the item!

Plus: mending clothes can be a fun, creative outlet!

Extend the life of your clothing with this creative sewing technique. All you need are a few basic sewing skills, thread and scrap material to get started — oh, and maybe a pair of ripped jeans.

We knew opting for a reusable, refillable water bottle was a better choice for the environment to reduce waste — it’s also good for our bank account!

Using a $20 reusable water bottle for five years is estimated to save $6,180 in what we would have spent on plastic water bottles. That’s on top of waste-prevention benefits, too!

5 Reasons to Opt for Reusable Water Bottles52 Ways Pledge, Project Clean Water / By Chelsea McGimpsey Share On Social Did you know? The U.S. alone uses nearly 50 million plastic water bottles each year. The majority of these end up in waterways or landfills and are a major contributor to stormwater....

Remembering our reusable shopping bags really does make a difference!

At the beginning of 2023, Colorado implemented a 10¢ charge on all single-use plastic and paper bags at major retailers to encourage people to use reusable ones — and it was a massive success.

The 10-cent charge amounted to $5 million in revenue for the state, spent on a variety of programs like the distribution of reusable bags

It’s the first day of spring! 🌸 The days are longer, the flowers are blooming, and we’re feeling the itch for spring cleaning. This year, we’re keeping the planet in mind by using non-toxic and low- or no-waste cleaning supplies like refillable cleaners, washable cloths, and reusable gloves.

Brands like Grove Collaborative, Blueland and Branch Basics make it easy with refills and cleaner concentrates to help us reduce single-use plastic bottles, too.

Green cleaning products clean your home naturally, without the unpleasant chemical residue that can harm your family and your pets.

A great way to have an impact on reducing climate-warming emissions: reduce food waste! An easy way to do that might sound obvious: make a grocery list.

Sticking to a grocery list can help make sure you only buy the food you know you’ll eat — and avoid in-store impulse purchases (which also saves you money!) — because you’ve planned on it.

About 30 to 40% of the food in the US goes uneaten each year – and individual solutions such as making a grocery list can address the problem
