Researchers at UNC Lineberger have launched a major initiative to track 1,800 women across North Carolina with endometrial cancer. The Carolina Endometrial Cancer Study (CECS) seeks to address two major disparities in the treatment of endometrial cancer.
>>>Endometrial cancer harbors one of the largest racial disparities among cancers in the United States. While endometrial cancer is slightly more prevalent in white women, Black women are more likely to die from it.
>>>While endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer in American women (ninth most common overall), endometrial cancer is greatly understudied. Endometrial cancer ranked #24 in federal funding compared to all other cancers in 2018, and funding rates are expected to drop, despite the worsening outcomes for endometrial cancer.
While one study cannot change how research into endometrial cancer gets funded, foundational research of the type being conducted in the Carolina Endometrial Cancer Study at UNC Lineberger will provide vital knowledge of the sort that in the past has attracted the attention of other researchers and the public.
