It is with such a heavy heart that I make this BPW post. We lost our dear friend and Chanute BPW President Sharon Carpenter on June 9, 2026. She had been in our local hospital NMRMC then transferred to St Luke’s in KC. She then was transferred to a skilled nursing facility in the KC area for strengthening and to be nearer to her daughter. Her passing was unexpected. A comforting note is that she is now reunited with her husband Chuck, the love of her life. Her strong faith is a reassurance of her eternal life with our Lord and Savior. Sharon will be greatly missed as our little club regroups with decisions.

The Chanute Business and Professional Women-BPW met May 13, 2026 with Tayah Ornelas as Hostess. Shannon Uhrmacher was a guest. She was the recipient of the large gift bag from the drawing at our NBWW special event fundraiser. A brief meeting was held. April minutes were read by Tayah and the Financial Report was given by Linda Powers. Jen Brown plans to attend the state BPW Convention in Salina held May 29-31. Sharon Carpenter has been working on the Publicly Book with the assistance of Kathy Williams. This will be sent with Jen. Tayah gave a brief program on the findings of the CDC on birth epidurals and spinal anesthesia and the correlation with cases of bacterial meningitis. Findings have pointed to improper sterile techniques, as well as the non use of face masks during procedures. There is always a risk with any medical procedure and we sign the forms giving our knowledge and consent. Tayah provided a delicious meal and the door prize was won by Linda after Prestyn Ornelas drew her name. Prestyn opened a birthday gift from Kathy for her 2nd birthday earlier this month. Our next meeting will be held June 10th with Jen as Hostess. Installation of Officers will be performed with Kathy providing the Installation. For additional information regarding Chanute BPW contact President Sharon Carpenter at 620-431-8532.

Good sources are leafy greens, cashews and dark chocolate. Adults over 50 don’t get enough magnesium. The healing power of darkness affects the stress response in the brain. Darkness helps heal the body. Avoid electronics, screens, tv before bedtime. The consumption of cacao which is the dried and fully fermented seed of the Theobroma cacao, the cacao tree from which the cocoa bean comes. Cocoa has 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries. The Chanute Business and Professional Women- BPW met Wednesday January 14, 2026 for their regular meeting with Kathy Williams as Hostess, providing the meal, door prize and program. Secretary Tayah Ornelas read the minutes of the December 10, 2025 meeting and Treasurer Linda Powers read the financial report. We discussed the BPW Kansas Foundation Scholarship application, which the only one received was from our Tayah. Vice President Jen Brown is on the Foundation committee and will be making suggestions to make the application process more user friendly. President Sharon Carpenter thanked Kathy for her work along with her great granddaughter Gracie Phillips in decorating the BPW Christmas tree for the Chanute Art Gallery Annual Festival of Trees. We did not win the People’s Choice this year but Kathy expressed her joy for the winning tree. Kathy has copied pictures of BPW meetings and events for Sharon to use in the Publicity Notebook. Kathy will continue to post on Facebook our meetings and activities. The program was given by Kathy with readings from the book “Let It Go, Just Let It Go” a Guide to Reducing Stress by Kent A. Rader (author, speaker and comedian). The emphasis of the book is how to reduce stress through awareness of our relationship between our thoughts, our feelings, and our moods. People are capable of controlling their stress levels, not by changing the situation around them, but by changing their REACTION to the situation. Thoughts are not reality, only our perception of reality. Our moods are constantly changing and can affect our thoughts and feelings. The book touched on the use of humor to fortify perspective, to improve our moods, and release uncomfortable emotions. Baby Prestyn drew the name of Linda for the door prize. Our next meeting will be 02/11/26 with Kathy as Hostess. BPW welcomes anyone interested in learning more about our club to contact Sharon Carpenter at 620-431-8532.
