Friends of Brookfield Serving the Brookfield community of Chantilly, Virginia

http://www.brookfieldcivic.org

Brookfield Civic Association members are an inclusive group of residents who share the common goal of promoting a safe and healthy community, and a community that is a great place to live. We hope to achieve this by engaging our community's residents, creating dialogue and deliberation for collaborative problem solving. We want to identify, confront and resolve the most pressing challenges of our

community and develop nuts and bolts plans that reflect a shared vision. While there are some ongoing issues which prompted our creation and initial meeting, we hope the Brookfield Civic Association can serve as a starting point in building a stronger sense of community, and we welcome your participation.

What a fun-filled day we had on Saturday, May 18th at our 10th annual Bike & Hike! It was great to chat with so many of you. It seems the children all had a great time meeting the firefighters and the police officer, having their bikes checked, having their faces painted, playing with their balloon creations, taking the nature hike, drawing with chalk, playing games, eating hot dogs and enjoying the other snacks! The kids must have been exhausted... we sure were! If you have photos, post them here or send them to [email protected]. We can add them to our slideshow.

We look forward to celebrating National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6th, hosting our annual stream clean up on Saturday, September 28th, and organizing our fall Town Hall meeting to be held at Brookfield Elementary School later in the autumn. We would love to do more to create a strong Brookfield community and welcome any and all suggestions!

If you are not already, please consider becoming a member of Friends of Brookfield. Annual Membership is $25 and you have already seen how some of the money is spent! In addition to sponsoring community events, we also maintain the “Brookfield Wall” and lighted flagpole located on Lees Corner Road and Route 50. If you have any questions about membership, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] or feel free to mail your $25 check payable to Friends of Brookfield to PO Box 222582, Chantilly, VA 20153-2582.

Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood or at one of our events!

Warm regards from the board members of the Friends of Brookfield!

Hope you got a chance to enjoy last night's super wolf blood moon eclipse.

The moon does not shed its own light. It looks bright because it reflects light from the sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is directly between the full moon and the sun. The moon is darkened due to the earth's shadow.

Super moon: Full moon close to the earth
Wolf moon: The January full moon
Blood moon: The sunlight passing through our atmosphere makes the eclipsed moon looks reddish, like blood.

The next total lunar eclipse will occur in 2022.

SNOW SAFETY - Some snow safety tips:

1. It is easier to shovel a couple of inches of snow a few times than to shovel the whole snowfall at once.
2. Consider lifting your wipers so they don't freeze.
3. You can clean off your car with a broom easier than most other tools. Clean the car first, then clear the driveway.
4. Please shovel the sidewalk in front of your house so kids can get to school, neighbors to work or to walk dogs.
5. It's better to squeeze 2 or even 3 cars onto the driveway when it's snowing - that way the snowplows can reach more road when they clear..
6. This is especially true If you live in a court. The trucks with plows must have enough room to turn around in order to push the snow out.
7. If you feel tired or too much pressure when shoveling, stop and rest or ask for help. Let's avoid heart attacks.

Winter is here and so is Norovirus...

John Silcox, communications director for the Fairfax County Health Department, offers this advice:

We are seeing more cases of norovirus, a gastrointestinal illness that people often call "the stomach bug." Common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea that usually lasts one to three days. Don't let this highly contagious illness ruin your holiday cheer. Good handwashing, staying away from others when sick and for 24 more hours after feeling better, and using a cleaner with bleach on any surfaces that may have been contaminated with the virus can help keep it from spreading in your family.
