It's the first day of September — Hunger Action Month! ⭐️

This month, people all over the country stand together with Feeding America and the nationwide network of food banks to fight hunger.

Personally, we at NVBO see this as an opportunity to take action on the hunger crisis and dedicate ourselves to a solution.

If you'd like to do the same, follow our friends at Western Fairfax Christian Ministries () for more ways to be involved!

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries provides food and financial support to those at risk of hunger and homelessness in the Northern Virginia area.

Here at NVBO, we're all about supporting our local small-business community!

We're always looking for ways to help, and wanted to share a few with you:

✅ Buy from small businesses whenever you can!

✅ Never ask for free stuff. This is their livelihood, not just a hobby.

✅ Give them some good old fashioned moral support! It's a tough world out there; words of encouragement help!

✅ Refer them to family and friends, so their business can grow.

✅ Like, share, or comment on their social media posts! The more engagement, the more traction and visibility they'll receive.

Northern Virginia is gearing up to return to school this week and we want to send out all of the good vibes to the students, teachers, and staff!

Our kids are the future, so let's send them off with words of encouragement and — hopefully — big smiles across their faces. 😄

We don't know about you, but we're cramming as much fun as possible into these last few weeks of summer!

And what better way to close out the season than a visit to an amusement park?!

We want to know: Are you a thrill seeker? Or do you like to keep your feet firmly on the ground?

Personally, we like a little thrill and go straight for the fastest and "turniest" (is that even a word? 🤷‍♀️) ride we can find! 🎢

At our last meeting, Sara Brown of shared her tips for creating a winning LinkedIn profile — and we walked away with some great information to share!

👉 There are 722 million users and 55 million company pages on LinkedIn, so don't sleep on it!

👉 Having a strong LinkedIn profile will make you more findable on search engines.

👉 LinkedIn is a great platform for building credibility, networking with other professionals, and sharing/receiving industry related news and updates.

Bottom line: You never know where your next connection will come from, so don't forget to make the most of LinkedIn!

"What can you learn from your competition?"

At our last bi-weekly meeting, Brian Carr from Dulles Insurance Services presented us with this question — and then dropped some knowledge about how your competitors can actually become some of your greatest assets.

How?

Just look at what your competition can teach you about your own business by answering these simple questions:

👉 Do you offer the same experience as them?

👉 Is their business sustainable from a financial and managerial standpoint?

👉 Do you even WANT their same clients or customer base?

👉 Are you considering lowering your standards to compete with them? (And, if so, is it worth it?)

By taking these things into consideration, you can help focus on what's important to you and avoid petty competitive behaviors along the way.

And the truth is, there's enough to go around and a better understanding of your competition can help you achieve long-term success!
