🌺 Hula Kahiko: Honoring the Roots of Hula 🌺

Many are drawn to the beauty of hula ʻauana, with its melodies and graceful movements. It holds a cherished place in our culture. But to understand the deeper foundations of hula, we must also recognize the importance of hula kahiko.

🌿 Hula kahiko is a broad term encompassing many forms of ancient hula, each with its own names, characteristics, purposes, and practices.

Through oli, mele, movements, and the knowledge passed from generation to generation, hula kahiko carries our histories, moʻolelo, genealogies, and the ʻike of our kūpuna. These traditions connect us to our ancestors, our ʻāina, and the stories that shape who we are.

Hula is not simply about learning steps or performing movements. It is about understanding the meaning behind them, the stories being told, and the cultural knowledge entrusted to us.

While hula ʻauana has its own beauty and place in our culture, hula kahiko remains essential to understanding the depth, history, and foundations of our hula traditions.

🌺 When we learn, honor, and perpetuate hula kahiko, we help ensure that the knowledge and voices of our kūpuna continue to live through future generations.

Every mele shared, every hula learned, and every lesson instilled today helps shape the generations to come. As we nurture our keiki in hula, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, and our moʻomeheu, we help them build a foundation they can carry forward with pride, respect, and aloha.

The future of our culture begins with what we teach our keiki today. 🌱

🌺 From keiki to ʻōpio, mākua to kūpuna, hula brings us together across generations. 🌺

This clip from the 2023 Arizona Aloha Festival features a combination of our classes performing Kumu Hula Alice Puluelo Naipo Park’s choreography of the hula ‘auana, “Aloha Week Hula.”

Composed by Jack Pitman in the late 1940s and made widely popular in the early 1950s through Alfred Apaka’s recording, the mele became the unofficial anthem of Aloha Week, now known as the Aloha Festivals.

We are honored to continue sharing Aunty Pulu’s choreography and to see her work carried forward by dancers of all ages through our Kumu Hula. From the youngest haumāna to our kūpuna, each generation has a place in hula. ❤️

Hula is for every age, and there is something beautiful about learning, dancing, and carrying it forward together.

🌺 Ke Haʻa Lā Puna 🌺

A treasured mele and hula from the lineage of Hālau ‘O Kekuhi, passed down to our Kumu through the lineage of Kumu Hula Lono ‘Ikuwā.

This hula noho, accompanied by the ipu heke, comes from the moʻolelo of Hiʻiaka and Pelehonuamea. While Pele and her sisters are gathered in Puna, Pele sees Hōpoe and Haena dancing by the sea and asks her sisters to offer a hula in response. When they say they have no hula, Hiʻiaka arrives carrying lehua and offers her mele, Ke Haʻa Lā Puna, describing dancing in the wind, the hala groves of Keaʻau, and Hōpoe and Haena dancing at Nānāhuki.

Here, we share this mele alongside the haumāna of Hālau Ho‘okahi I Ka Hula, continuing to carry forward the ʻike entrusted to us through our Kumu Hula and hula lineage.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Lala, our community is still recovering and in need of basic supplies.

With the generous kōkua of our hālau ʻohana, Hālau Hoʻokahi I Ka Hula and Hālau Hula ʻO Kalikopuakalehua, we have purchased and delivered supplies to community hubs in Hawaiʻi, with more deliveries to come.

May we continue to mālama one another and kōkua where we can. Every act of aloha makes a difference. ❤️

🔥 ʻŌTEʻA 🔥

‘Ori Tahiti, or Tahitian dance, featuring Lucia of Hālau Hula ʻO Kalikopuakalehua, as our Hālau Ho’okahi I Ka Hula student dancers return to the foundations of ʻOri Tahiti.

Our vāhine work their tāmau and fa’arapu, building control and consistency, while our tāne bring the pā’oti to life.
