🌱 What a wonderful afternoon at the Chandler Public Library!

Yesterday, local kids became Climate Detectives for our Green Lab Arizona workshop. They discovered how dark surfaces trap heat, explored a real satellite heat map of their own neighborhood, and planted microgreens to take home and grow.

Thank you to the Chandler Public Library for hosting us, and to every family who joined. Watching kids light up about science never gets old. 💚

🌵🔍 Green Lab Arizona is Coming to Chandler Downtown Library! 🌱☀️

We are excited to bring Acumen Haven’s Green Lab Arizona – Climate Detectives to Chandler Downtown Library on October 14, 2026!

Through this FREE, hands-on climate science workshop, children ages 6–12 will become young climate detectives, exploring how extreme heat affects our neighborhoods and discovering simple ways to make our communities greener and more sustainable.

🌡️ Temperature Challenge: Discover why some surfaces get hotter than others.

🛰️ Neighborhood Heat Map Investigation: Explore real satellite heat maps, identify neighborhood hot spots, and investigate how trees can help cool our communities.

🌱 Grow Your Own Microgreens: Plant microgreens, learn about sustainable food, and take home a growing kit!

📍 Location: Chandler Downtown Library, Arizona

📅 Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2026

⏰ Time: 3:30–4:30 PM

👧🧒 Ages: 6–12 years

🎟️ Cost: FREE!

Every child will take home a microgreen growing kit, a personalized neighborhood heat map, and a collectible animal card.

At Acumen Haven, we believe that climate education should begin early, be engaging, and inspire real-world action. Through Green Lab Arizona, we hope to nurture curiosity, environmental awareness, and a sense of responsibility among the next generation.

🌱☕ Our First In-Person Climate Action Café!
Today marked a small but meaningful milestone for Acumen Haven as we hosted our first in-person Climate Action Café.
It was a small gathering, but it was a very good start. The informal café setting gave us an opportunity to sit together, exchange ideas, and discuss how we can continue creating meaningful climate education and youth engagement activities in our community.
Much of our conversation focused on what comes next. We discussed several upcoming initiatives, including our next library workshop, a research opportunity for high school students in Spring 2027, and a future workshop for high school students on El Niño, its impacts, and why understanding climate variability is important for young people.
We also talked about how future activities can become more interactive, research-oriented, and connected to real environmental challenges.
One of the most important outcomes of today’s gathering was simply having the opportunity to connect, share perspectives, and begin planning together. Climate action does not always start with a large crowd. Sometimes it starts with a few people around one table, sharing ideas and deciding what to do next.
💚 Our next in-person Climate Action Café is planned for November. We hope to welcome more community members, students, educators, and anyone interested in climate action and environmental education.

🌏 Exciting Webinar: Unlocking the Power of ENSO for Water & Disaster Resilience 🌊🌪️

On 4th September 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting an engaging session with Dr. Rashed Chowdhury, a renowned climate science expert, who shared invaluable insights into how El Niño and La Niña influence water resources, extreme weather events, and disaster preparedness—particularly in Bangladesh.

Participants from Bangladesh and various parts of the world actively participated, making the discussion vibrant and global in perspective.

🌧️ What do you actually find when you open a blocked drain?

In many cities around the world, it is often much more than just water. Polythene, plastic waste, sand, cement, and broken construction materials can accumulate inside drains, blocking the pathways that rainwater needs to flow.

Isn’t it time we asked ourselves: Are we being responsible for the waste we leave behind?

When intense rainfall meets an already obstructed drainage system, the result can be severe urban waterlogging.

This October, Acumen Haven’s Research Training Program will take this real-world problem into the field. Participants will gain hands-on research experience while investigating waste-induced waterlogging vulnerability. Open to participants worldwide - join us from wherever you are.

Research trainees will observe drainage conditions, identify potential causes of blockage, assess waterlogging susceptibility, collect field evidence, and map vulnerable locations.

The goal is not simply to learn research methods; it is to use research to better understand a problem that affects communities every monsoon and to explore how evidence can support more resilient cities.

📢 Applications Are Open: Acumen Haven Research Training Program

Are you interested in learning how real-world research is conducted?

Acumen Haven is organizing an 8-week hands-on Research Training Program, beginning in the first week of October 2026.

🌧️ Topic: Waste-Induced Waterlogging Vulnerability

Poor waste management contributes to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions, while climate change can intensify rainfall and increase waterlogging risk. Waste dumped in streets and drains further worsens the problem by obstructing stormwater flow.

Through this practical program, research trainees will learn how to:

✅ Formulate research questions
✅ Write a research proposal
✅ Conduct a literature review
✅ Design a research methodology
✅ Collect and analyze field data
✅ Interpret findings and write a research report

Interested participants will also have the opportunity to join a publication track after completing the program.

🎓 Eligible participants: Applicants must have completed SSC, O Level, or an equivalent exam
📅 Program begins: First week of October 2026
⏳ Duration: 8 weeks

🌧️ Why does waterlogging happen, and how can we measure which areas are most vulnerable?

In this short video, Avijit Saha, Acumen Haven Fellow, talks about the issue and introduces Acumen Haven’s upcoming Research Training Program, starting this October.

Participants will assess waterlogging vulnerability through field data collection and mapping.

🎓 Eligibility: Secondary School Certificate (SSC), O Level, or equivalent qualification.
🌍 Although the video mentions Bangladeshi students, the Research Training Program is open to students from anywhere in the world. International applicants are welcome to apply.

You do not need a university degree. You do not need research experience. You do not need to already know what a literature review is.
If you have finished your SSC, your O-Levels, or an equivalent exam, you are eligible for our Research Training Program.
We designed it this way on purpose. Research is a skill that gets taught, not a talent you are supposed to arrive with.
Starts October 2, 2026. Rolling admissions, limited founding cohort.
