In the aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton, communities across the Southeast are facing unprecedented challenges. One organization at the forefront of relief efforts is Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian group dedicated to serving those in need during disasters and crises. Help support them in our Bourbon Giving fundraiser: https://give.bourboncharity.org/bourbongiving2024/Campaign/Details

-Who Is Team Rubicon?-
Founded in 2010 by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jake Wood, Team Rubicon was born from a desire to provide swift aid to those affected by disasters. Their mission is to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises, leveraging the skills and experiences of military veterans and first responders.

-Veterans Serving Communities-
Team Rubicon’s volunteers, known as “Greyshirts,” are predominantly military veterans who bring their unique skills and dedication to disaster response. These individuals are trained to handle high-pressure situations, making them exceptionally effective in crisis environments.

-Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts-
In response to Hurricane Helene, Team Rubicon launched extensive disaster relief operations across multiple states. On September 27, 2024, Route Clearance Teams began removing hurricane debris from roadways in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Their efforts have been crucial in restoring access and safety to affected communities.

-Making a Tangible Impact-
Beyond immediate disaster response, Team Rubicon is committed to long-term recovery. Their operations include muck-outs, chainsaw work, flood mitigation, debris removal, roof tarping, and heavy equipment operations. For instance, in Buncombe County, NC, more than 60 Greyshirts have been on the ground assisting with these critical tasks.

-Your Role in Supporting Their Mission-
By donating to the Bourbon Giving 2024 fundraiser, you’re directly supporting Team Rubicon in their mission to provide disaster relief.

-Join Us in Making a Difference-
The bourbon community has always been known for its generosity and camaraderie. Let’s come together to support Team Rubicon and the countless families affected by these hurricanes.

Warrior Shilo Found a New Way To Live

When Shilo was matched with her Service Dog, Javelin, she had just been medically retired after serving 17 years in the Arkansas Air National Guard.
Shilo deployed twice — first to Iraq, and then to Afghanistan. In her second deployment, she was part of the first response team to mortar and rocket attacks, taking responsibility for all squadrons to check accountability and assess damages. Since she worked the night shifts, she was more exposed to those attacks.

Shilo was exposed to horrific sights and sounds; the memories were hard to live with. Once she returned home, Shilo struggled to cope. She isolated herself, rarely leaving home. She says her husband did all the errands and grocery shopping, and Shilo couldn’t even go out to watch her kids’ games.

“I was not really living,” Shilo says. “I didn’t feel like I had anything left to offer to the world and was just kind of a drain on everyone.”

Shilo had deep, invisible wounds — and no traditional methods of treatment seemed to help.

But that was almost 10 years ago.

A decade in with Javelin by her side, Shilo has accomplished what people told her she’d never do. She went back to college and graduated with a double bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology. She went on to work part time, became a proud and happy grandmother and enrolled in graduate school.
“Who knew a dog could do this? They’re amazing,” says Shilo.

Now Shilo is working full time, helping other people who are in mental health crises. She’s experiencing all that life has to offer. And all the while, Javelin is there to support her.

“He’s about 10 years old now and still going strong,” Shilo says. “He’s still got plenty of energy to deal with me, and I’ve become calmer because of him.”

We’re excited to kick off our 2024 Support Our Troops fundraiser, and we’d love for you to be a part of it!

This campaign is all about making a real difference in the lives of our Veterans and their families. We’ve partnered with two incredible organizations, K9s For Warriors and Fisher House Foundation to help provide critical support where it’s needed most.

Why It Matters:
K9s For Warriors: This amazing organization pairs service dogs with veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and other service-related trauma. These dogs aren’t just companions; they’re lifelines. For example, veterans have shared how their service dogs have helped them regain their independence and confidence, allowing them to reclaim their lives.

Fisher House Foundation: Fisher House builds comfort homes where military and veteran families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. It’s a home away from home during some of the most challenging times. Families have expressed how the Fisher House provided them with not just a place to stay but a supportive community during their hardest moments.

How You Can Help:
Your donation can make a huge impact. Plus, when you donate, you’ll be entered to win some incredible prizes, including exclusive bottles of bourbon!
