Today, we celebrate 17 years since our organization’s founding! On this day in 2009, St. Dominic Savio Academy opened its doors for the first day of school with just four students and four staff. We are grateful for the vision of our Founder and Executive Director, Corinna, who took a dramatically different approach that has impacted so many families. What started as St. Dominic Savio Academy, a nonprofit day school, has evolved into Story Autism Center — a place where every child’s journey is respected as a unique story still being written. We are proud to offer three distinct programs that allow us to serve children with autism from diagnosis to young adulthood.

Thank you to all the families that have trusted our team to join them on their autism journey for the past 17 years. And thank you to our INCREDIBLE staff members, so committed to our mission to love and lead children to happy and fulfilling lives. Happy Anniversary, Story family!

Story’s ABA clinic serves learners newly diagnosed with autism up to age six. In addition to one-on-one therapy, children gather for circle time and a group activity each afternoon. Yesterday, they played with slime! It is a joy to see all the clients gathered, exploring something new alongside their peers, with support from their therapist. 💛

In July, Story celebrated two high school graduates with a beautiful ceremony. 💛 After opening remarks and a video featuring photos and messages from the staff, each graduate said goodbye to their classroom team. So many people came out in support of these students, including high school classmates and families, Story staff, outside therapists, former classmates and teachers, and friends and family. 🤩 It was so moving to reflect on each student’s achievements in their time at Story and all the lives they have touched along the way.

We wish both of our graduates and their families great success in their next chapter. Thank you for trusting our team to journey with you. It has been a privilege. 🫶Congratulations, graduates! 🎓

⭐️ Event Spotlight ⭐️

Attention, Parents! The Arc of Arizona, Inc. is hosting Wings for Autism on October 3rd, an event to support families by helping prepare their child for air travel. ✈️ Registration fills very quickly, so we recommend setting a reminder to register on August 1st at 9 am. A few of our families have attended in the past and highly recommend it! Here are details about the event from their website, linked below:

“Wings for Autism® is an event designed to alleviate some of the stress that families who have a child with autism experience when traveling by air. The program provides families with the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security, and boarding a plane. Wings for Autism also gives airport, airline, and Transportation Security Administration professionals and other personnel the opportunity to observe, interact and deliver their services in a structured, learning environment. This experience is equally useful for families that have a member with other intellectual or developmental disabilities that are concerned about the ability of their family member to travel.” -The Arc of Arizona

Story’s ABA clinic serves children with autism ages 1 to 6. In 1-on-1 therapy, our clients learn through play. Effective ABA for early learners is seamlessly woven by our skilled therapists into your child’s favorite activities and places a heavy emphasis on FUN. We can’t think of a better way to meet developmental milestones! 💙

Our preschoolers have been exploring the theme of community helpers this month. This week, they learned more about dentists and the importance of brushing teeth to prevent cavities. Using eggs to represent teeth, they poured soda on them to see what would happen overnight. The next day, they found stained eggs! At their centers, students used toothbrushes and toothpaste to try to remove the stain. Thank you, teachers, for organizing such a fun science experiment for the students! 🦷

Story’s K-12 Academy serves students ages 6 to 22. Our classrooms operate on a 3-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, with small class sizes of up to 9 students. Our skilled teachers and therapists work with students in core academic areas such as math, reading, and writing, as well as daily living, vocational, and self-help skills. 💛

Last fall, our community joined together to fundraise for playground improvements, which also enabled Story to earn a matching grant. Students of all ages on campus have truly enjoyed these upgrades to their playground:

⭐️ a GREEN grassy field for walks, group activities, and leisure
⭐️ a new climbing structure and swing seats
⭐️ a shade canopy to make even the warmest days more enjoyable
⭐️ new materials to support engaging outdoor play
