Happy Black History Month ✊🏿🤎 -

Bayard Rustin was an LGBTQ+ rights activist and worked with Martine Luther King Jr. He taught MLK about nonviolent civil resistance and even helped plan the March on Washington. Due to his sexuality, he was held from the spotlight and used as an engineer or change and not the face of it. Towards the end of his life he focused on gay rights and activism in the 80's. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Black History Facts ✊🏿🤎

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was created as a reaction to racial violence in the early 20th Century. Most notably the race riots of 1908 in Springfield, Illinois.

African-American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization.
Founded by W.E.B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey, Ida B. Wells, Lillian Ward, Emil G. Hirsch and Henry Moskowitz in 1909. The NAACP, is now the largest and oldest civil rights group in America.

Their mission was and continues to be "to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination".
