Today we honor the kāne who help carry our traditions forward…whether as dancers, musicians, leaders, or the dads supporting from behind the scenes.

From setting up before events and helping wherever needed, to encouraging their children through rehearsals, performances, and challenges, your presence strengthens our hālau and our lāhui.

Mahalo for leading with humility, service, and aloha. Your dedication reminds us that the perpetuation of culture is not carried by one person alone, but by the entire ʻohana working together.

We celebrate and honor you today and every day.

Hauʻoli Lā Mākuakāne, Happy Father’s Day! ❤️

🐚 Have you ever wondered why Hawaiians blow a conch shell before a performance or ceremony? 🐚

Known as the pū, its powerful sound can announce the beginning of something important. Traditionally, it was used to call people together, herald the arrival of aliʻi, mark significant events and more.

Each pū carries its own natural tone, shaped by the shell itself and the breath of the person sounding it. When many pū are blown together, their sounds intertwine, creating a powerful symphony.

During Merrie Monarch Festival week, Nā Kāne O Waiolama opened their Ho‘olaule‘a set in this traditional way. The accompanying chant comes from their Kumu Hula, Emery Aceret, honoring a practice that continues to connect us to our ancestors and cultural protocol.

🌺 What is a Fa’arapu? 🌺

One of the most recognized movements in Tahitian dance is the fa’arapu: a rapid circular rotation of the hips powered by the dancer’s core and lower body while the upper body stays poised and controlled. In Tahitian, the word fa’arapu refers to a circular stirring motion, like stirring a pot.

Behind every good fa’arapu are countless hours of training for stamina, technique, and control. What may look effortless on stage is the result of dedication and practice.

Enjoy this moment from our performance as we celebrate the beauty, strength, and art of Tahitian dance. 🌺✨

Today we celebrate the mākuahine and kūpuna wāhine whose aloha, strength, and guidance continue to shape our communities and future generations.

From nurturing our keiki to carrying forward ʻike kūpuna and cultural traditions, your presence is deeply valued and appreciated every day.

This Mother’s Day, we also honor two of our beloved cultural practitioners, Lucia and Tyanna, and our Kumu Hula Nālani, whose dedication to both ʻohana and community reflects the spirit of aloha in action. We also honor all mothers in our student group, Hālau Ho’okahi I Ka Hula.

Happy Mothersʻ Day & Hau’oli Lā Mākuahine from all of us! 💐

“Haʻina ʻia mai ana ka puana…” 🎶

A familiar refrain often heard at the close of a mele, sharing with us that the story has been told.

This graduation season, we celebrate the stories and accomplishments of our cultural practitioners of Hālau Hula ʻO Kalikopuakalehua. This month, we congratulate Kainoa on graduating high school, Malia on graduating college, and to all of our haumāna reaching new milestones this season, including Hālau Ho’okahi I Ka Hula’s Hali and Evan. ❤️

May your ʻike, hard work, and dedication continue to guide your path forward. The story is told, and many beautiful chapters are still being written.

Hula teaches discipline, patience, and haʻahaʻa.

The “duck walk” asks the body to stay low, steady, and controlled. It challenges strength, balance, and focus. At first, it may feel difficult, but through consistency, the body learns and grows.

This is the practice of hula. And this is life.

We follow protocol, stay committed, and continue showing up, even when the work may be uncomfortable. Over time, what once felt hard, becomes part of us.

Keep showing up. 💪🏽

Behind the grace of hula, there is strength, control, and endurance, built through years of training for the cultural practitioners of Hālau Hula ‘O Kalikopuakalehua.

Who one learns from shapes how they carry their ʻike. Guidance from Kumu Hula grounded in lineage and kuleana is essential. Train with purpose, and grow with aloha. 🌺

During this year’s Merrie Monarch week, as Kīlauea stirred once more, the presence of Pele felt especially close. Across the festival, mele honoring her were chanted and danced with intention. 🌋

This clip of Aia Lā ʻO Pele, from the lineage of Aunty Maiki Aiu Lake, brings together our cultural practitioners of Hālau Hula ‘O Kalikopuakalehua and the students of Hālau Ho’okahi I Ka Hula in a moment of shared ʻike.

We are grateful to witness these traditions continue to be practiced, taught, and experienced. 🌺
