Beyond Coal at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a part of the national Sierra Club Campuses Beyond Coal Campaign. Mining coal and burning coal to generate power is the single most destructive industrial process currently employed on a daily basis in our country. In addition, coal plants emit one-third of our nation’s annual carbon dioxide emissions, making them a major contributor
to global warming. From taking coal out of the ground, to burning it to generate electricity, to disposing of waste—coal destroys the environment, pollutes our air and water and jeopardizes public health. Simply, we deserve to know if our school is invested in such a dirty and dangerous source of energy, and we don't want our school supporting it!

thank you to everyone who showed up in support of the U of I system divesting from fossil fuels. to our amazing speakers, you inspired us with your positivity and words of wisdom around an otherwise bleak issue. to our activists, you brought the passion and energy necessary to pull this off. a HUGE shoutout to Rudy LaFave and all the members of our Action committee for putting this together.

Beyond Coal leads the Fossil Free UIUC campaign that fights for U of I to remove the hundreds of millions of dollars we have invested in fossil fuel companies. This movement began on college campuses and has grown exponentially to over 1,000 institutions committing more than $6 TRILLION to fossil fuel divestment worldwide.
A student referendum showed 85% of our STUDENT BODY supports coal divestment.
The FACULTY SENATE has passed a resolution urging coal divestment.
Chancellor Jones has been FORMALLY ADVISED TO DIVEST from coal.
The STUDENT SENATE has urged FULL fossil fuel divestment AND 3/4 of the student body supports IMMEDIATE fossil fuel divestment.
YET WE HAVE NOT DIVESTED.
