Community Engaged Research to Improve Diet, Nutrition, and Health
September 3 - 4, 2026 | 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM CT each day
Join the National Academies for a virtual workshop examining opportunities and challenges with community-engaged nutrition research and how it can support and enhance the uptake of dietary guidelines.
Scientific evidence has shown that diet and lifestyle play a role in preventing chronic disease. Yet translating this evidence into meaningful, motivating messages about healthy eating remains a challenge. Incorporating community engagement into research can help bridge this gap.
The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions that will address how community is defined by different groups, methods and challenges of conducting community engaged research, and the potential for this research to improve the diet and health of a community. A range of perspectives will be incorporated including individuals with real-world practice in community engaged research.
Speakers will include:
Susan Scrimshaw, planning committee chair and member of the National Academy of Medicine
Tambra Raye Stevenson, American University; Women Advancing Nutrition Dietetics and Agriculture
Bruce Y. Lee, City University of New York
Roxanne Swentzell, The Pueblo Food Experience
