Street Outreach Movement

Street Outreach Movement Street Outreach Movement is a volunteer organization focused on advocating for the homeless Housing is the only permanent solution to end homelessness.

We have two main priorities as we develop one on one relationships with our homeless population. The first priority is to develop the programming, planning, and funding to end homelessness in our community. The second priority is to meet the homeless where they are, offering an assist to those living on the street, connecting when we can those in need with various service providers. Temporary over

night sheltering of our homeless that often struggle with addiction issues, or mental health challenges is a band-aid approach.

This photo with my Friend John was taken last year, November, when he moved into his new apartment, no longer homeless!

Happy to share, John has signed a new lease for another year of housing!

This past year he had both success and challenges.

First the success, john has elevated his self reliance to providing me with a list of needed groceries, cleaning supplies, and clothing, no longer simply accepting items provided. He continues to remember that he has needed monthly mental health appointments. He has had no contact with law enforcement, nor does he have any court obligations.

A previous property ban was lifted since Johns fiances and banking are handled by the same institution that previously had him removed (my favorite piece to all of this!).

On the downside, my role as his payee was briefly interrupted when his maternal mom did an end around, became his payee, and stole over $3,000 (3 months) of his disability payments. The funds will not be replaced, life goes on, I continue to be his payee.

The other challenge was with Johns housing, he likes to start his day at 2:00 am, walking around his unit that early was a challenge for the occupant that lived directly beneath him. After some legal back and forth, the solution was found in relocating John to a different part of the same building. Ideally, a tiny house, not an apartment building would be the best solution for John. Growing pains, well worth the efforts to keep John housed!

Very Grateful that in addition to John, our other two former homeless have also resigned new leases, and continue to be housed, no longer a burden on resources, and functioning as members of society.

A very huge thank you to everyone who has had a role, and continues to have a role in helping to keep these three people housed and secure! No way to do this alone, without the assistance from others, their housing collapses, and they are back on the streets.

I connected as a volunteer with a local shelter HopeWorks here in Albuquerque!

The homeless population here is so great in numbers, so many at every turn in this awesome city. They have the added stress of trying to survive in a very hot, harsh environment, where resources are strained.

This morning when I showed up to volunteer (assigned to the shower station, just in the cards I guess?) there was a huge group of men and woman waiting to get into the day shelter. When the butterfly doors swung open, staff and volunteers were standing there greeting everyone good morning, handing out coffee cups!

Inside this low barrier day shelter there is respect and love given to the shelter guests at every level by everyone, and in return gratefulness and gratitude is extended back from the guests.

I look forward to working with and learning more about the challenges and the solutions that work here in Albuquerque. How organizations like HopeWorks move those who are un-housed, addicted, or struggling with mental health onto a more productive, healthier life path!

Happy Sunday!

If you made a donation towards the mobile shower project please read the following announcement:

We regret that the mobile shower project will not be going forward as planned. We appreciate all the support and publicity as we moved this exciting build forward. We are currently in the process of selling the trailer we had purchased as the platform for the shower build.

As soon as the trailer is sold, we will give our donors the option to
have the funds donated refunded, or put towards other Street Outreach Activities.

We appreciate all the help and support we have received in not just the shower project, also the street outreach!!!

Thank you!

If you are ever presented with an opportunity to walk alongside a homeless man on his journey who wants to be housed, grab it!

More fulfilling than any exotic vacation or new car purchase!

Today was moving day, and the tell of his journey was when he added “meat for freezer” to the shopping list.

What a great day, spent with a friend.

Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, three separate days, three separate court visits advocating for and making sure our homeless meet all their legal obligations and court dates.

A simple missed court appearance can escalate quickly to a bench warrant and possible jail time.

This weeks visits, Iroquois County in Wabash, Illinois (not pictured) was the most impressive in their overall approach to resolving a fair outcome for our street guy!
