New Hardback: "Gathering the Story: Designing Education Through the Documentary Lens", Patsy Iwasaki.

The documentary film genre is a powerful medium for knowledge dissemination and societal impact. While filmmaking has become increasingly accessible through technological advancements, the literature remains limited regarding subject research and data collection, the foundational production stage. This study addressed this gap by synthesizing the practitioner expertise of 12 professional filmmakers across the Asia-Pacific region, revealing five actionable recommendations and critical insights.

These findings were operationalized into a content-rich, interactive instructional website: Five Tips for Filmmakers: Documentary Film Research and Data Collection. Guided by the ADDIE educational design model and the ARCS motivational framework, the project followed an iterative, four-phase cycle. This rigorous process included distilling practitioner insights, designing the digital module, implementing it with emerging student filmmakers, and conducting a final validation assessment with the original professional cohort to ensure industry alignment.

Results confirmed that Five Tips for Filmmakers yielded a significant, positive educational impact, providing essential guidance for students navigating the subjective and complex creative production process. This multi-phase project contributed an original pedagogical resource that translates authentic professional knowledge into an engaging digital learning experience, empowering emerging filmmakers to share their resonant, meaningful documentary narratives with a global audience in a clear and purposeful manner.
