Did you know that bats can eat up to 1000 insects per hour? Your friendly neighborhood bats spend their evenings feasting on the pests that could otherwise cause damage to crops in agricultural areas.

We are seeking to form partnerships with local farmers and landowners in order to better uncover the secret boons of bats. If you are interested in joining our community, simply click the sign up link and add your information. We will contact you and let you know if your property is a good candidate for our study (this is determined by proximity to forests, aka bat habitat). Then we will arrange to set up a bat detector that will collect the ultrasonic sounds of bats as they locate and eat bugs after dark.

We have bats! The detectors placed in agricultural fields around Champaign have yielded a bounty of data.

We have put our trusty research assistants to work using a special software that can sift through audio files and pull out those precious few seconds here and there where a little bat flew by in search of a tasty meal.

Here are a couple examples of what a bat call looks like to a computer. The second image is zoomed in to show the detail of changes in frequency.

We plan to keep the detectors out listening a bit longer as the crops continue to grow. Once all of the data is compiled we will have a clearer understanding of the bats in Champaign County.

Four bat detectors went into Champaign fields this week! We are so excited about our partnership with these farmers. They have been incredibly curious about our project, and their knowledge, kindness, and generosity has truly humbled us. We can't wait to share our findings with them as the season progresses.
