Children's Mental Health Awareness Month (observed every May) highlights the importance of emotional well-being for youth. This month encourages families, educators, and healthcare providers to spot early warning signs, reduce stigma, and connect young people with essential community and medical support.

Why It Matters💙💛💥
Early Intervention:
Addressing mental health early in development leads to healthier futures and prevents issues from worsening.

Current Climate:
Rising academic pressures, social media influences, and post-pandemic stressors have created a recognized youth mental health challenge.

Shifting the Narrative:
Many advocacy groups promote "Children's Mental Health Acceptance," which directly combats stigma by focusing on Wellness, Resilience, Action, and Purpose.

Our mission is clear vision for all school-age children.
Vision problems can significantly impact a child's school performance, as clear and comfortable vision is essential for reading, writing, and participating in classroom activities. Children with undiagnosed or untreated vision issues may struggle to focus on the board, experience headaches, or have difficulty concentrating on their work. These challenges can lead to frustration, reduced confidence, and falling behind in their studies. Poor academic performance may sometimes be mistakenly attributed to behavioral or learning issues when the root cause is a vision problem. Regular eye exams are crucial to ensure that your child has the visual skills needed to succeed in school.

Jachoia McKelvey, Clinic Director, represented Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation at the recent Georgia Charitable Care Network’s 21st Annual Conference, the premier event for staff, volunteers, board members, health care professionals or anyone who cares for low income populations.

The conference brings together health care professionals, community leaders, and advocates dedicated to advancing health care accessibility through free and low-cost clinics. Providing high-quality education, networking opportunities, and a chance to hear from national and state experts, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation made new connections with potential partner clinics and visited many of its existing partner clinics.

We are so grateful for Georgia Charitable Care Network and their long-standing confidence and support for our mission and tele-optometry program.

The photos below highlight a few of our partners.

Our mission is the result of a challenge Helen Keller issued to the Lions Clubs International
We work every day, one individual at a time, to execute her challenge.

FAR TOO MANY GEORGIA CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND SENIORS LACK ACCESS TO VISION SERVICES

Clear Vision for CHILDREN 💛💙 DEVELOPMENT & LEARNING
For children, clear vision is foundational, with roughly 80% of learning occurring through visual processing.
✔Academic Success: The ability to see clearly, track words, and focus on both near (books) and far (whiteboard) objects, enabling effective reading, writing, and, according to Dignity Health, computer work.
✔Visual Skills: Beyond 20/20 sight, this includes proper eye teaming (using both eyes together), focusing, and tracking.
✔Physical Coordination: Hand-eye coordination for sports and physical activities.

Clear Vision for ADULTS 💛💙 PRODUCTIVITY & LIFESTYLE
For adults, clear vision focuses on maintaining visual acuity to manage high-demand tasks and professional work.
✔Functionality: The ability to read, work on computers, and drive comfortably.
Comfort & Stamina: Freedom from chronic digital eye strain, eye fatigue, and headaches from focusing.
✔Preventive Health: Identifying early signs of eye diseases (like glaucoma) before they cause irreversible damage, ensuring long-term eye health according to Complete Family Eye Care.
✔Clear Vision for Seniors: Independence & Safety

Clear Vision for SENIORS💛💙 INDEPENDENCE & SAFETY
✔Independence: The ability to perform daily tasks, such as reading medication labels, driving, and recognizing faces, notes NVISION Eye Centers.
✔Safety: Reduced risk of falls and accidents by maintaining proper depth perception and peripheral vision.
✔Contrast Sensitivity: The ability to distinguish objects from their background, which often decreases with age (e.g., seeing in low light).

Together, we can transform the lives and generations one person at a time. LEARN MORE at https://lionslighthouse.org/ways-to-give/
