On this day in 1859, abolitionist John Brown was hanged in Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
Brown had stayed at Mary Ritner's boarding house on East King Street during the summer of 1859. He planned his raid here and stored weapons in the Oak and Cauffman warehouse on Main Street.
