It’s an honor and privilege to have our incoming PFLAG National Board Member, Keturah Johnson, speak at today’s March on Washington: Defend the Vote, an event commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, where a quarter million Americans once stood for equality and freedom. Today, we carry that work into a new generation.

Right now, more than 600 bills and ballot measures across this country trade on fears about transgender people, but their impacts extend far beyond the greater LGBTQ+ community: they threaten access to education, healthcare, safety, employment, housing, transportation, and financial resources for rural communities, women, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, and families of all kinds.

We have been here before. We have lived through these same political stunts.

We are proud to advocate alongside our partners at the NAACP to defend the right to vote, protect equal opportunity, and secure economic dignity. Across gender, sexuality, faith, race, and region, we move as one body and one demand. When we stand together, no statehouse and no silence can outlast us.

Happy birthday to Lily Tomlin! 🎉

The ‘9 to 5’, ‘80 For Brady’ and ‘Grace and Frankie’ star isn’t one for staying quiet when politics targets people.

Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment in March 2023 following a rash of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being brought in around the US, Tomlin said, “I mean, limiting any group’s rights is a travesty. People cannot push backwards to that.”

She went on to say, “Most people know when injustice is being done. They sense it themselves, whether they even accept your point of view or not. At least they would be equivocating. They would just say, ‘Well, that’s what that group of people wants. You know, they’re not harming anyone.’”

Pronouns can be tricky! Maybe it’s your first time using they/them to refer to a single person, or maybe a loved one is transitioning and wants to use a pronoun that affirms their gender identity—but is new to you. Whatever the case may be, there are lots of ways to learn, honor, and use someone’s pronouns. Here are a few to get your started:

• Try a role play with someone (who is NOT your LGBTQ+ loved one) to help you understand what it feels like to be misgendered.
• Write a story about your loved one using their affirmed name and pronouns.
• Make a gender jar and put $1.00 in the jar every time you make a mistake.

On this day, 1 September 1949, disabled Jewish le***an author, communist and transgender activist Leslie Feinberg was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Feinberg, who went by the preferred pronouns "ze" and "hir", worked in factories, before writing pioneering articles addressing LGBT+ issues, and particularly issues of transgender liberation. Ze published hir first novel, Stone Butch Blues, in 1993 to widespread acclaim, and is considered to be a founder of the contemporary trans movement. For many years Feinberg battled with complications from Lyme disease, and died in 2014, aged 65, with hir wife, Minnie Bruce Pratt, by hir side. Hir last words were “Remember me as a revolutionary communist.”

Beloved by q***r communities for decades—most memorably for his role as Frank-n-Furter, the sweet transvestite, from Tr*******al, Transylvania! in The Rocky Horror Picture Show—Tim Curry has been a light in the darkness of everybody's life.

The recipient of an Emmy Award, and nominated for Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, a Grammy, and more, Tim Curry had a prolific career that spanned Broadway, the West End, small-screen and big-screen roles, and albums that had us all “...do the rock.”

Rest in peace, Tim Curry.
