Daily Devotional: How Not to Handle Your Sin
Scripture to Read:
(Gen 3:1-4 ESV) "Now, the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die."
Truth to Think About:
Sin must not be tolerated. Sin must not be accepted. Satan is far superior to us. "Forbidden fruit may be sweeter, but it always spoils first," someone once stated. Do not attempt to cover up your sins.
The story is told by observers of the famed Niagara Falls. One man watched as a giant eagle swooped toward the river and landed on a large chunk of ice. On the ice was an animal carcass, which became the eagle's dinner.
He dug his two-inch talons into the ice, munched away at his prey, and floated with the ice down the river toward the dangerous falls. The night was approaching, and the temperature fell rapidly. The eagle instinctively knew when to lift off from the ice to avoid the falls.
As he approached the falls, he tried lifting off the ice. His torso lunged upward, but his talons were frozen in the ice, which had hardened as the temperature dropped. He struggled to free himself, but to no avail. He plunged over the falls to his certain death with the ice stuck to his talons.
Many people today are like the eagle – enjoying life and unaware that our sins take a greater hold on our hearts than we realize. Without the freedom that Jesus brings, sure, death awaits us.
Questions to Think About:
What is the danger of not recognizing our sins?
How can Jesus bring freedom to our lives?
Prayer to Pray: Heavenly Father, we pray to You, asking for Your help and protection. Guide us away from the snares of sin that can so easily entangle us. Open our hearts and minds to the liberating power of Your grace, that we may find freedom from sin in You. In the name of Christ, Amen.
