We have overcomplicated presence in marriage to the point where we're planning date nights and weekend getaways as the primary strategy for connection while missing it completely in the thousand daily moments that actually build it.
Presence is not a retreat. Presence is looking up from the screen when your spouse walks into the room.
It's asking the real question at the end of the day instead of the logistical one. It's being actually in the conversation you're having instead of having it while thinking about six other things. It's the three second choice to put the phone face-down when they want to tell you something.
Your spouse is not asking for a performance of connection. They are asking for the actual thing. The quiet, consistent, undramatic experience of having the person they chose actually show up in the ordinary moments.
That's the whole ask. It's also, apparently, the hardest thing to give.
When's the last time you were fully present with your spouse β phone down, actually there? How long ago was it? Be honest.
