When our ASPIRE team travels to Kenya everyone brings one large suitcase filled with goodies to donate. Clothes, workbooks, fabric, handbags, totes, sewing tools, sports equipment, small kitchen items, all kinds of shoes, and especially athletic shoes. All of these new and slightly used items bring a smile to their faces, reminding them they are loved.

As Naomi said “These gifts remind us that there are people who deeply care about these children so far away. This act of generosity encourages us and brings hope to those we serve in our community.”

Head to our website to learn more, sign up for our quarterly Field Notes email, and follow our student stories on social media. Become a monthly donor, no matter the amount your kindness is truly life changing.

ASPIRE Globally is a community built on relationships. During our recent time in
Kenya, we were deeply moved by the courage and hope of the students and parents we met.
These faces represent stories of incredible perseverance, from families in the villages of
Kenya.

Whether it is a mother celebrating her daughter as the first university graduate in the family
or a student dreaming of becoming an architect, these individuals are the heart of everything
we do. We are honored to walk alongside them and support their journeys through faith,
education, and sports. Each smile and every story reminds us that while the challenges are
great, the potential for transformation is even greater.

We spent a meaningful day in Kibera touring the settlement and engaging in deep
discussions with our local community leaders. As the largest informal settlement in Nairobi,
Kibera presents unique challenges, yet the resilience and resourcefulness of its residents
remain truly inspiring. Our leaders, Mathew and Naomi, guided us through the community to
meet with families and hear their stories firsthand.

These discussions are essential to the ASPIRE Globally mission. By listening to those who live
and work in Kibera every day, we can better understand how to provide effective support
through our focus on faith, education, and sports. We are grateful for the opportunity to
strengthen these relationships and ensure our programs continue to meet the real needs of
the community.

We began our education focused days with student interviews and were particularly
moved by the stories of perseverance shared by local parents. To provide a focus on
wellbeing, we gathered at Ikigai Workspace, a peaceful garden setting where students like
James, Peter, and Cecilia shared their journeys. Cecilia is the first university graduate in her
family, and her success is a proud milestone for her community. These families all credit
Madame Sarah for her incredible dedication in guiding students through their academic
paths.

Our journey continued to Starehe Boys School, where seven of our students are studying to
become architects, engineers, doctors, and pilots. This boarding school environment fosters
the leadership and excellence needed for these young men to reach their full potential. With
the support of our volunteers and donors, we are seeing the ASPIRE Globally mission come to
life. We are forever grateful for the opportunity to help transform these lives.

Our morning began with a home visit to a family whom ASPIRE community leaders Mathew and Naomi originally met in church. Their daughter Gladys is one of our new students at ZAF. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces when we arrived with food and necessities. Mathew and Naomi have built a deep friendship with Gladys and her family that exemplifies our mission to build lasting relationships.

The informal settlement of Kibera was established for Nubian soldiers in 1918 and has since grown to become the largest slum in Nairobi, with over a million residents. Despite the significant hardships of poverty, crime, and disease, there is a powerful sense of community. Residents are active and resourceful in creating their own networks of support to help one another through every challenge.

The weather in Kibera shifted from a cloudy day with rain puddles to bright sunshine, but the students were ready to play regardless of the conditions. Every session starts and ends with words of faith and encouragement to ground the team in their values. Mathew and Naomi, our ASPIRE community leaders in Kibera, use their strong leadership skills to create a safe space for the youth to play and build lasting friendships. Alongside them, assistant coaches share a verse of the day while teaching essential soccer skills and knowledge of the game.

In all our years walking through the slums of Nairobi, the area where John and Emma work is the most heartbreaking. Mukuru is a high density community of 700,000 residents across 30 villages. Families live in one-room iron sheet shacks where they face severe poverty, poor sanitation, and high safety risks. Very few homes have access to electricity, and 20 families might share a single communal water tap and latrine.

This community school is all that is available for many. It is funded by parents because they cannot afford overcrowded government schools. ASPIRE Globally hopes to continue to grow to provide scholarships for students who could never afford a quality education.

During our visit, David received a hug and a high five from a new friend. We also joined Emma, a social worker and community leader, to better understand the needs of local families. Together, we were able to provide Grains of Grace food for a young family of five.

Tuesday was a full ASPIRE Workshop day, led by our Strategic Operations Director, Ken Alwala. We began with prayer and relationship building, while reviewing our values and mission statement. We shared challenges and successes, reviewed budgets, fine-tuned policies and procedures, while setting goals for the future. Also on hand was our wonderful Kenya Football Director, Ricky Mwati. ASPIRE now has three Community Leaders sharing faith through soccer in Kenya; in Kwale, Kibera, and Mukuru. We are so grateful for their servant hearts and dedication to those in need.

Exposure to the Gospel through soccer in these impoverished communities moves kids away from crime, drugs, and alcohol. All ASPIRE Coaches are trained through the TREC program of Ambassador Football. These trained coaches become leaders of faith and integrity, which are essential in increasingly fatherless communities.

Through muddy roads, motorcycle rides, and a little rain, our time in Kwale was filled with meaningful moments alongside ASPIRE community leaders Godwill and Janet. From village gatherings and women’s Bible study to coaching kids and supporting families, we witnessed faith, resilience, and community in action across every stop.
