It feels surreal writing this post as we’re finally official. The idea of Buckeye Pastures came alive almost a year ago. It started out as a type of “sanctuary” geared toward providing pastures for the cows retired from use on dairy & beef farms and morphed into an organization dedicated to forging relationships with those small, family farmers AND the animals that are raised on their farm.
Right now the animal-based farming industry is seeing a decline in demand. And, like always, the government is there to bail out big ag with emergency funds, which does little to help the farms that rely on income from the farms to feed their families.
But, queue the topic of demand. Consumer habits are changing - rapidly. More and more venture capitalists are financing alternative meats and the need for plant crops has increased. So, even if family farmers received a bailout from the government that actually helped, it becomes this vicious cycle of using tax dollars to put a band-aid on a gangrenous wound.
As we continued on our journey to bringing Buckeye Pastures to life, we realized there was a bigger opportunity to help both humans and animals, to be the bridge between getting viable support to family farmers and giving the animals on the farm an opportunity to live out their lives in peace.
And so here we are!
We have connected with some amazing organizations, such as Animal Outlook (Farm Transitions), Mercy For Animals (TransFARMation), and Miyoko's (dairy farm transition), to help compile and share resources for farmers wishing to switch from animal-based farming to plant-based crops.
Our grassroots fundraising efforts are currently focused on helping to provide support for items such as feed and medical, to alleviate the financial strain of keeping the cows on the land with the farmers who transition. We know that many small farmers truly love these animals while in their care and, sadly, the reality is that when a farm transitions, the animals will be sold to other farms.
There is so much more to share, so much work to do, and so many humans and animals to help. Here's to transforming lives!
