🎖 History Connects Community to the land at Brinton Run Preserve Cannon Dedication and America 250 Celebration 🎖

On an unseasonably warm but breezy afternoon on May 16th at Brinton Run Preserve, North American Land Trust (NALT) held an event commemorating the gift of a handcrafted replica Verbruggen revolutionary war cannon from Mitigation Resources of North America, and celebrating the United States of America’s 250th anniversary. Guests were warmly greeted by members of NALT’s staff, where a replica 1st Continental Regiment of Foot uniform and drum were prominently on display. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres were provided in the Baldino Family History and Nature Center, and guests were encouraged to mingle and meander throughout the heritage garden and nature trails in anticipation of the guest speakers and the evening’s entertainment.

Speakers included military historian and author of The Pennsylvania Associators, 1747-1777, Joseph A. Seymour, Dr. Eric Anderson, President of Mitigation Resources of North America, keynote speaker, General John P. Jumper, and Randall Spackman and Noah Lewis portraying British loyalist and African American Revolutionary War Soldier, Edward “Ned” Hector, respectively.

We are so grateful for the friends, neighbors, and colleagues that joined us to celebrate the preserve and our dedication to history and collaboration.

As part of the Environmental Markets Conference, Mike Duus and Matt Stutzman participated in a field tour of the Battle Ridge Mitigation Bank in Tennessee. The tour was hosted by (MRNA), the project sponsor and mitigation provider.

North American Land Trust holds the conservation easement on the approximately 325-acre mitigation bank, which is being restored to enhance stream, wetland, and habitat functions. The tour provided an opportunity to see firsthand the quality of restoration work being completed on the property and to learn more about the project's ecological benefits.

Mike and Matt were impressed by MRNA's professionalism, expertise, and commitment to successful restoration outcomes. NALT is excited about the long-term prospects of the Battle Ridge project and the lasting conservation benefits that this restored stream and wetland system will provide for the region.

Longcliff Preserve hosted neighbors and friends to learn about the different forest types at the Longcliff Preserve at The Village At Longcliff . This fascinating walk showcased the rarity of some habitats, not because of the trees themselves, but because of the assemblage and makeup of some unique habitats found on the Preserve. Participants even got to learn how to measure circumference to determine diameter at breast height (dbh), a common tool for foresters.

It's Forb Friday! No matter the season, spring, summer, or fall, you are bound to see a Phlox in bloom. There are around 60 species of Phlox native to and distributed across the lower 48 of the United States, many with wide distributions along the east or west coast, and some with narrow ranges and specificity to unique habitats.

Well loved for their myriad colors representing the rainbow, the Greek translation of Phlox is "flame." Phlox are typically hardy, robust, fragrant, and long-blooming, making them a favorite of gardeners and plant enthusiasts. They can withstand a variety of conditions from rich woodlands to thin soils. They are also easy to propagate, by seeds, division, and by stem cuttings. No matter where you live, you are bound to find a native phlox that will do well in your garden.

Many Lepidoptera (moth and butterfly) larvae depend on phlox as a larval food source, including the hummingbird hawk-moth. It is also an important nectar species for pollinators.

🌱 What is a forb? A is an herbaceous (non-woody) flowering plant, excluding grasses which also flower, but are termed "graminoids." Like and follow our page for future Forb Friday facts!

“A Birding We Will Go!” Using our Bird Survey Kit from Birds Georgia and Cornell Lab, we were able to begin seasonal point count surveys at one of our largest corridor conservation areas in Northwest Georgia. We conducted point surveys in forest, edge habitat, and in grassland communities. Here is a sample of some of the birds we heard during our first survey.

The NALT team had a fantastic time following up our annual staff and board retreat with the America 250 Celebration and Cannon Dedication at Brinton Run Preserve. Collectively, we pulled together an event that brought together neighbors, friends, and colleagues from near and far to enjoy a beautiful late spring day to honor these partnerships. It was truly a team effort to put together such a fantastic event.

Enjoy some candid photos of our team from the event.
