We love our Post Commander Maria Ortega! 🫡🇺🇸💪

Being raised in a community where your history connects to every part of your present, it is difficult to find the courage to leave. It is similarly difficult to forge a path and stay.

Questa del Rio News is committed to highlighting different members of our community, both those who have created their paths and planted their own roots in the community that raised them, and those who have pursued lives outside of the community—through our Representando series. This series is dedicated to those who are Representando communities in northern Taos County, in various facets of life.

Maria (Duran) Ortega is no stranger to hard work, a trait instilled in her while growing up on her grandparents’ ranch in Amalia. Born in 1957, Ortega learned the value of hard work and determination from her grandparents, Jose and Eutimia Arguello, alongside her mother, Edna Duran, and her nine siblings.

We have filed our brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit challenging U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs rules that deny veterans the full education benefits they earned.

In Rudisill v. McDonough (2024), the Supreme Court of the United States made it clear that veterans who qualify for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill may receive up to 48 months of combined education benefits. However, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has issued rules adding restrictions Congress never intended, including requiring a break in service before accessing the full benefits.

That is not what the law says, and it is not what veterans earned. Veterans kept their promise to serve. Now it is time for our nation to Honor the Contract.https://vfw-org-hqagarhxahbybyd9.z01.azurefd.net/-/media/VFWSite/Files/Media-and-Events/Articles/2026/2026-03-05---Dkt-69---Petitioners-Principal-Brief---25-2033.pdf

Working on cleaning up our new sink today! Just a reminder to everyone, we are a 501-c(3)19, but we rely on our members and volunteers (Auxiliary plus!) to improve and manage the facilities. Any help is appreciated, we can even sign off on community service, for anyone needing hours!

Presidents’ Day is about more than a long weekend…

It’s a reminder that leadership matters.

Not just in the Oval Office — but in homes, units, workplaces, and communities.

Leadership is service.
It’s sacrifice.
It’s putting others before yourself.

Sound familiar?

Veterans understand that kind of leadership better than anyone.

Today, we honor those who’ve led our nation.
And we recognize the leadership you carry every day.

Your Vets4Warriors community sees it.

Your tribe values it.

CONNECT.

Hope through connection
