Being raised in a community where your history connects to every part of your present, it is difficult to find the courage to leave. It is similarly difficult to forge a path and stay.

Questa del Rio News is committed to highlighting different members of our community, both those who have created their paths and planted their own roots in the community that raised them, and those who have pursued lives outside of the community—through our Representando series. This series is dedicated to those who are Representando communities in northern Taos County, in various facets of life.

Maria (Duran) Ortega is no stranger to hard work, a trait instilled in her while growing up on her grandparents’ ranch in Amalia. Born in 1957, Ortega learned the value of hard work and determination from her grandparents, Jose and Eutimia Arguello, alongside her mother, Edna Duran, and her nine siblings.

4-H meeting at the Post yesterday was a lot of fun. Their next one here in Cerro will be May. It’s an honor to host this great groups of kids and parents. We know they will pull a bunch of ribbons at the County Fair in August!

We have filed our brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit challenging U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs rules that deny veterans the full education benefits they earned.

In Rudisill v. McDonough (2024), the Supreme Court of the United States made it clear that veterans who qualify for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill may receive up to 48 months of combined education benefits. However, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has issued rules adding restrictions Congress never intended, including requiring a break in service before accessing the full benefits.

That is not what the law says, and it is not what veterans earned. Veterans kept their promise to serve. The 41st Annual Tribute to Women in the Military is tomorrow, Friday, March 6th, at American Legion Post 49 in Albuquerque!

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (NMDVS) will be in attendance, with Women Veterans Program Manager Amberly Viner available to answer questions and provide information on programs, benefits, and services for women veterans across New Mexico.

This annual event features dozens of vendors, valuable resources, and opportunities to honor the service and contributions of women who served—past, present, and future.
