On April 16, as we approach the 18th year anniversary of the largest mass shooting on a college campus in US history, I reflect on the lives and legacy of 32 young adults and their professors killed, the 17 physically wounded, and so many more psychologically traumatized, the community impacted, and the ripple sent throughout the world. The true heroes are those that stood in the face of a disgruntled and disturbed young man, who could have received help. The true heroes are the families, the survivors, friends, and community that stood up for change to make our campuses safer; and who continue to advocate for a sustainable and perpetual model of long-term financial care for those that are impacted by mass violence events in this country. We know who you are, we know what is needed. Thank you to all Virginians, and legislators, who supported our First in the Nation Mass Violence Care Fund initiated by Governor Youngkin in his 2024 budget. We hope that other states, as Maine has, will follow in our footsteps. What better way to honor lives lost and the healing of those in need. Please pledge a small monthly donation to support all heroes impacted by mass shootings and mass violence events.
We are here to help fund the long-term physical and psychological care needs of mass shootings survivors so that they might be able to achieve some form of recovery, new normalcy and, hopefully, joy in life once more.
