Smarter Football Application materials

The Wilkinson County Wildcats require that all youth football coaches, team moms and managers be certified through the USA Football, Heads-Up football program prior to the beginning of each season. There are 21 Heads-Up Certified personnel for this season and it is anticipated that there will be additional certifications. The Wilkinson County Wildcats believe that a large number of coaches, team moms and managers operating from a common knowledge base, (Heads-Up Football Certification), serves a “force multiplier” for monitoring the activities and safety of our players to avoid injuries. By order of the Commissioner, all certified personnel are authorized and encouraged to take immediate actions to prevent any unsafe behavior.

The Wilkinson County Wildcats youth football policies are designed to assist in enhancing academic success. To motivate and encourage students, parents and guardians towards academic achievement, there are no registration fees for players during the 2019 youth football season. But, during the season a player must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, or equivalent with no grade in any subject being an “F” or otherwise unsatisfactory (“U”) and have no disciplinary or conduct issues in school, on the bus, at home or in the community. The skill level of the player shall not be considered. All organization personnel are responsible for monitoring player activities. Head coaches will verify grades and ensure player compliance with these standards.

Wilkinson County Wildcats youth football is part of the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network, a not-for-profit organization formed to provided youth sports programs to our community. The need for youth sports and recreational programs is validated and magnified by information that attributes long-term value to participants in these programs. Numerous studies document the direct value of youth participation in sports. Since its beginning, Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network served more than 600 participants in sports activities throughout the Wilkinson and Amite County area. Ongoing efforts are in place continue improving the quality and integrity of our programs. The Wilkinson County Wildcats youth football program was created in 2106 with the purchase of used helmets and shoulder pads. Since that time and with the assistance of Riddell and the on-going generosity of the organization’s founder, some of the program’s equipment has been upgraded. A 2018 and 2019 equipment grant from Riddell assisted the organization in purchasing blocking shields and new helmets for some players. Our available resources allowed for the participation of only half of those youth who desired to participate in our football program. We remain committed to providing a positive learning and team experiences along with the opportunity to create life-long memories for our youth. This will be done through fund-raising activities and a solid financial approach to managing these resources. Our youth football program will require an additional 60 helmets and 120 set of shoulder pads to improve the quality of our program and increase the number of participants.

Major challenges face the Wilkinson County Wildcats youth football program in the future. These include the uncertainties brought on by our equipment needs. Our volunteers will continue to work toward providing a quality experience in the most effective and efficient manner possible with optimism for the future of this exceptional sport. The Wilkinson County Wildcats are committed to operating on a solid financial foundation. These efforts are based on a mixture of fund-raising, grants, and charitable gifting. This approach will enable the program to realize our objective of keeping participation affordable while continuing to offer a quality program for our participants. An equipment grant will strengthen not only our commitment to Smarter Football but also our ability to implement Smarter Football by allowing us to re-direct some of our fund-raising time and resources to areas of training, seminars and workshop attendance centered around proper coaching techniques.
