CCBA HISTORY
The history of the Centralia Community Benevolent Association (CCBA) dates back to November 1990. The CCBA was started by seven churches, including the First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, and St. CCBA started as an outgrowth of the Centralia Ministerial Alliance. The food pantry was originally at the former Franklin School (the building attached to BCMW) on

Rexford and Franklin Avenues. In the first few years of its operation, the number of people and families served increased. The food pantry is operated purely by volunteers and get most of their food secured from the Central Illinois Foodbank in Springfield. In 1990, 16 churches and the Centralia Rotary made cash and food donations to keep the food pantry stocked. In 1995, it increased to 22 churches and many social and service clubs and people. Volunteer Bernice Husher, of First Baptist Church, has been at CCBA from the beginning. In 2017, the CCBA moved to 508 N. Poplar St., at a new, handicapped-accessible, and brightly lit building. The old Franklin School had fallen into disrepair. The University of Illinois Extension service has a person regularly come to show clients economical ways to prepare some foods they have on-hand. The mornings tend to be busier than afternoons on Wednesdays (on which day the CCBA is open weekly). Ray Draper is the current treasurer and his wife, Vonda, is the current secretary. Marc Profancik is the general manager and Rev. Joannie Naraghi is the president of the organization. The previous president was Rev. Tommy Henegar.
